Merged StopSylvia emails

The purpose of the site is still valid. Its usefullness is much larger than just SB. It should remain up and under the same name, in my opinion.

Done!

I'm thinking Jonathan Rhys Davies as me.

Sean Connery, maybe? ;)

If I start the storyline a couple of years earlier, I want Kathy Bates to play Kaz.

I think we have mentioned this before. I think it is a good idea. If you have difficulties with typing you can use Dragon Speech Recognition Software. I have seen someone type with it almost as fast as she can talk. This is someone who cannot use their hands. I suggest you talk to publishers and see what they think.

Keep the site up as an example but please stop making threads on here about the emails you get from your site.

She's dead. Enough already!

When I had a skeptical blog about John of God, I would sometimes get letters so bizarre, I didn't even understand what the person was trying to say. I didn't know what to make of them.

I couldn't tell if the person thought John was fake, real or...both.

Somehow, both.

Here's one of the oddest confused attacks on me that I've ever heard. When I worked on StopSylvia.com, I had a real life acquaintance who was very negative about the whole thing. She constantly mocked me, sighed with exasperation and rolled her eyes at it. For months, she used the old argument "Anyone dumb enough to believe this deserves to be scammed!" or some variation thereof.

Then, one day, she followed that up with "Well, how do you know they aren't real?! I once went to a palm-reader and she was pretty accurate. She got a lot of things right about me. You shouldn't be so judgmental and negative and automatically assume they are wrong. "

If anyone can explain this obvious cognitive dissonance to me, I would be much obliged.

WRT the name of the site, have you considered something like "Sylvia Brown Truth" or "Sylvia Browne Facts"? Not only will that not be as morbid, but it also might draw in more people who actually believe in her.

As I said in another of these SSB email threads:

Some of you may be wondering why I am still posting StopSylvia email, when she has passed on.

I suspect that I will continue to post here any SSB emails I receive which I feel are worthy of sharing with you all.

If these threads stop getting a decent amount of reads and replies, I might reconsider this, but many forumites continue to show interest in them.

Sorry, Brattus.

As I believe has been said to you before: The "ignore" feature is your friend.

But then, I hope that I am too.

I had considered names like that when I first created the site, including The Truth about Sylvia Browne" (a nod to Randi's book "The Truth about Uri Gellar" - which had been renamed from "The Magic of Uri Gellar"), but I decided that "Stop Sylvia Browne" was both more honest and up-front as to my intentions, and a continuation of my "Stop so-and-so" 'franchise' begun with "Stop Kaz" (brand name recognition and all, you know?).

But, after her lame attempt at shutting the site down through an attorney, I realized that naming it something explicitly anti-Sylvia helped to "put paid" to any legal claims she might have that people would think that my site was one of hers.

For these reasons and others, including the fact that the site has been mentioned (by name) in many news reports and web pages (and thus, people may be searching for it by that name), I am loathe to rename it at this point.

Thanks for the idea, though!

StopSylvia email: "Sylvia Browne death""

I received the following email at StopSylvia, with the subject "Sylvia Browne death":

Sylvia Browne dies this past Wednesday this should give Robert some closure I spoke with him years ago and he was still very much in pursuit of Mrs. Browne debunking people in the world What a shame to have built a career upon lies and public humiliation . I wish Robert a speedy recovery and peace of mind in the future...

[name]

I assume that "dies" instead of "died" was a typo rather than a weird "postdiction" of some sort, and that it was Browne - and not me - being referred to as having "built a career out of lies and public humiliation".

My reply:

[name]:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

If you would, please refresh my memory on when you spoke with me, and what in particular we discussed (your name rings a faint bell, but I'm afraid that I cannot place it - my apologies.

As far as "closure" goes, the site's purpose is as valid as ever, and will remain up for the foreseeable future.

Why? Becauseas I fear her family and publishers are likely going to try to capitalize on her demise by pushing her books, DVDs, etcetera, even more, hoping to take advantage of the public's tendency to idolize celebrities after they die, so I will be leaving the site up, to minimize the impact of any such marketing efforts. Also, I hope that visitors to the site will apply what they learn from it to other "psychics" in the media.

I hope to add an article to the site soon, both announcing her death, and explaining why the site is still up.

Best regards,

Robert S. Lancaster

More Sylvia Browne threads please.

There are only seven on the front page of GS&P at the moment and we wouldn't want people to think we didn't care enough to make a fitting tribute to her passing.

Or would we?

Merged several "StopSylvia email" threads. A separate thread is not necessary for each new email.

Akh:

Sarcasm duly noted.

I have already explained, in at least two of said threads, why I am continuing to create threads regarding some (but by no means all) of the emails I continue to receive at StopSylvia.

And I think it apparent, by both the view/reply counts of most of those threads, as well as the content of the replies therein, that there are many here who welcome those threads.

Your opinion otherwise has been duly noted, thanks for expressing it.

Is it so surprising that the death of - arguably - the most famous "psychic" in America for the past decade or so, a skeptical site about whom was born and nurtured in this very forum, and with whom the founder of the JREF has had a long-running and very publically-antagonistic relationship with, would be the topic of much discussion here?

I hope you find a title for the site that you are comfortable with. I think the idea of doing a redirect to ensure the existing links go there is a good one. The 'Stop ... ' legacy is worth retaining, imo.

I also think the idea of a book about these sites: how you had the ideas, how you went about them, and the impact they have had on your life, and on others would be a great idea.

Why not a compromise, and have one thread for discussion of emails about her passing, and separate threads for other emails?
