Hardly surprising, this site gets crawled alot, you constantly spam it with links to your site. Backlinks from high traffic sites = bigger rankings.

and anyway links leaving this site are "nofollowed" and so pass no Google benefit

Google does not work like that. Any links from this site get ignored for Google rankings. Reason rel="nofollow" is used.
