StopSylvia.com: Google Rankings

Dev, they are more involved than I can go into here. I need to try (again) to resolve them with GoDaddy.com (and get a php environment installed on my computer) before trying to discuss them in any detail here, but thanks for asking.

well, if you need any help with LAMP stuff, let me know. Its been a while for me, but Im more than happy to try to nut stuff out for you.

Fourth here on my Google search. The extra spot goes to the Dutch Wikipedia entry.

3rd in the UK.

Even Wikipedia's opening paragraph is damning of her.

As RJ says, I am currently unable to update the site, due to both technical and health issues.

Even were those issues resolved, I seriously doubt that I would do daily updates. I don't think I could maintain the quality I would want while adding new articles at that rate. I seldom added articles at that rate even in the site's heyday.

There are many bloggers linking to the site already. I am not comfortable with Link Trades anyway. If a site/page is appropriate for my site';s Links page, I add them with no reciprocal Lnk asked for.

I am sure Robert would love to do that. However he does have technical issues with doing that.

Though I am sure if he spoke with someone who knows what they are talking about the issues could be solved in a short time. Might have to spend $. There may be other issues as well.

this is my specialist arena, what issues do you mean?

updating more frequently doesn't help rankings.

wiki pages are difficult to beat, but not impossible, her own EMD will be much more difficult to get past.

ps. comparing rankings from different locations, on different indexes (uk, nl, etc) and using personalized search (default on unless you turn it off) only shows you where it ranks for you - it will be different for most everyone.

It's the #2 result for me.

Possibly because my Google is tailored to me, and I've visited your site. Although that doesn't explain why her site is #1. :con2: I swear I'm not a fan of Sylvia!

1. domain age (hers is 2002)

2. EMD (exact match domain for the query you're using)

3. page / domain authority - from inbound links, the primary factor on most queries, but the name and EMD are what make her#1 virtually unassailable here

the shot below shows the PA (page authority) and DA (domain authority) for the top results.

you can also see (mini) "sitelinks" on the top 2 sites indicating better internal keyword structures (and possibly inbound links to inner pages) on the top 2 sites, indicating these are authority sites on the subject.

we have the same for "Business SEO" on our site Google search "Business SEO"

edit: also, if you should want to see what the "benchmark" rankings on de-personalized results look like, you need to either add &pws=0 onto the end of the search string, or download the Firefox depersonalized search addons for whatever country or indexes you are interested in, here

FTP connection issues, to begin with.

It has been a while since I have tried, so I do not recall the exact error message, but I seem to recall Filezilla getting a message that either the FTP User name or FTP Password were incorrect.

I have been over this multiple times with Godaddy tech support to no good end.

Onlyindirectly, as I understand it. As in, it would likely result in more links to the site (to new articles as they are added), which has a direct effect on rankings. True?

I'm really not worried about ranking any higher, but thanks for all the info in this thread!

Got it - thanks!

really? wierd, have you tried the java browser program upload through the hosting panel? we have quite a lot on there and never have any problems with CuteFTP.

well, new content will rank for new things of course, so you have more "lines in the sea", so to speak.

and yes its still links but this link [pardon pun] (between links and rankings) is becoming much more tenous of late, even super high powered ones (we make) arent reacting like they used to, so random real ones are unlikely to do anything specific or noticeable

I actually think the SEO bubble has burst with Google's assault this year, many people who have been employing the wrong SEOs are now being punished.

no worries, you've done well to get it so firmly in view for anybody looking.

ultimately for traffic and awareness you'd probably be better off making funny vids and putting them on FB.

edit. and if its something you are going to want to update or chnage into the future, you should stick it on WP, the ease of use is a whole new world compared to HTML. & its easy on godaddy (if you can FTP lol)

obv if its just for posterity and youre ok with the colours ;) leave it as-is

Haven't in a while. Will again, thanks.

Ummm... okay.

Thanks, but the credit mostly goes to the members of this forum, who have helped me with Search Engine Rankings from day one.

Not my forte, but thanks for the suggestion!

I have considered WP, or other content managers, but would prefer to stick with the site's current, hand-crafted format. For now, at least.

I like the colors, damnit! Why do some people dislike the colors? [/rhetorical question]

Hardly surprising, this site gets crawled alot, you constantly spam it with links to your site. Backlinks from high traffic sites = bigger rankings.

LAMP stuff, let

He can't upload a file to a website, i doubt he is running Linux. Wamp is what you mean.

I think it would be great if he just logged into godaddy then used his webbrower to upload files. Then he could post the emails on his site, i dont know why he is happy to post them here but too i'll to post them on his site?

Anyway if he posted them on his site, people could go and check as often as they wanted.

Google does not work like that. Any links from this site get ignored for Google rankings. Reason rel="nofollow" is used.

Interestingly(?) Sylvia Brown gives wiki first, followed by a youtube of "psychic gets busted" then StopSylvia

Her page doesn't come on the first page with this mispelling

For the first time in a long time, I just did a Google search for "Sylvia Browne" to see where my site was listed when someone searches on her name.

I know it varies from country to country, etc., but here and now, the sites listed are, in order of their listing, are:

1. Her own web site.
2. The Wikipedia page about her.
3. Stop Sylvia Browne!

I am very pleased to see that. I remember we celebrated here when my site cracked the top ten!

Also, note how few of the top pages listed are "pro-Browne". Other than her own site, are there any?

Very cool.

Am I mistaken, but weren't you briefly #1 at one point? Or at least #2? Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Discussion of how a debunking site managed to achieve success seems very on-topic here to me. It's well within the purview of "general skepticism". If we were discussing how to make some random site be successful, then it would be off-topic, but we're not.

RSL's site is a great lesson in how to get skeptical ideas out to the people who matter--potential fraud victims. His approach of: be respectful, stick to the facts, and be polite is clearly a winning formula, and constitutes a useful lesson in general skepticism. Of course, this is infuriating to those who want to undermine and tear down skepticism.
