The American education system has just fallen over and smashed into a million pieces, proving it's uselessness for logic and critical thinking. It's time to teach them in elementary school so that in 15 years this kind of derelict, irrational, low IQ "thinking" will be a part of the dark age past.

I believe we should not ignore this and someone should start a debunking site on him. This is just too sad and pathetic.

The WBC is very well known, and has been for years. A web search will turn up plenty of info. Basically, they have some sort of calvinist pre-destination ideology, wherein homosexuality is a special kind of sin, and that any association with it, even in the form of not actively condemning it (he protested billy graham for example for not being sufficiently anti-homosexual), is proof that you are not part of god's predestined. They follow this philosophy to an extreme conclusion, that everyone who is not them and a few others who support them is going to hell. They take their fame and the universal hatred directed towards them as proof that they are following God's divine plan.

EDIT: Specifically, they will protest anything, any tragedy, (If you can think of a tragedy in America over the past ten years they were probably there protesting) to "thank god" for punishing America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

What Fred Phelps wants is publicity. If violence is used against the WBC gang, he gets lots of publicity.

My suggestion is to do what we did at the Columbine memorial. Tell people in the crowd to simply ignore Phelps and his band of idiots. Don't respond to the insults and taunts. just walk past as if the WBC gang wan't even there.

I was being completely serious.

I am unaware of a single cult of this nature that *doesn't* have some sort of sexual issue against children. It seems to be part of the pathology of the cult leader.

Jim Jones, the Bagwhan and his followers, the Centrepoint cult here in NZ and many others (I suppose I should look them up later)

They are a family of lawyers, but I doubt they finance their cult from lawsuits...they supposedly spend 200k a year on their travel budget. They must have some other income or family money.

I have to disagree with you - they do have an ideology and I think they sincerely believe in it and what they are doing. What we see as distasteful and opportunist they see as necessarily opportunist. They sincerely believe that these events are signs of the evil in the world today, the evil that will prevent people reaching the enlightenment that they believe in. In their minds what they are doing is an act of Christian charity in its most basic form.

Besides this is supposed a forum about critical thinking, not ad hominem fallacies, tho' there is little evidence to support it.
 
Why do people still pay attention to Phelps? He's the real life version of a 4chan troll.

It's very calculated. Haven't you noticed the pattern? Any event that tops the news media chart is the event they pick. Phelps, while irrational to think anyone but his own indoctrinated family will ever join his group or give a rat's ass about his message, is nonetheless rationally choosing to go anywhere the national news media ia certain to be. If the media would just stop rewarding him, Phelp's behavior would at least stop being rewarded. But the media cannot help themselves. They don't mind whatsoever feigning outrage while playing right into Phelp's hand giving him the publicity he seeks.
