Step too far for Phelps

I am not arguing "Phelps is gay and therefore his arguments are invalid."

I was not talking about the validity of his religious ideology. I take it for granted that most here think his beliefs are prima facie nuts.

I was wondering about the underlying psychological motivations behind his beliefs.

I suspect that "gay" doesn't even come close to describing the Phelps creature. Gay is pretty normal. Anyone who takes their internal conflicts about sexuality as far as this guy has crossed into the relm of freakishness on par with "Silence of the Lambs".

As for getting them to stop, clearly trying to point out their errors intellectually isn't working. Michael Moore was on to something with his response (not that I'm by and large a fan of Moore) in making them an object of ridicule. Groups like this feed off our scorn but can't stand our laughter. Having a choir of gay men sing Carpenters songs at them was sheer genius in my view. In that setting they don't look evil they just look like the bunch of stupid bumpkins they are.

^^^^^^ this

Plans to picket the funerals of other victims were still in the works, but have been headed off by Gallagher’s offer of access to a national audience. A Westboros pokesperson, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said Gallagher’s offer of access to an audience estimated at 10M was too good to pass up.

AT KXXT, Phelps-Roper will be a guest for a half hour on the morning show hosted by Steve Sanchez from 8AM-10AM Saturdays. It won’t be the first time - the two are said to have sparred on the air before.

RBR-TVBR observation: This is not the first time radio operators have stepped up to keep this group away from grieving families. We personally have friends spanning the spectrum – left, center and right – and we have to say that an extreme distaste for the actions of Westboro is one thing that seems to unite us all. Thank you, Mr. Gallagher, KXXT and CFNY, for preventing this group from adding its particular accent to what is already an unthinkably horrible situation...

What heroes.

Which can still be based on fallacies.

I think the best thing to do would be to take a page from Moore (never thought I'd be saying that). Just have a lot of people singing sad, pretty songs at the funeral. One of the victims was class president of her middle school class, they could have the school choir come and lead everyone in a few funeral appropriate songs. Sad, but touching and the best possible way to point out what scum the Phelps clan are.

On a somewhat different note, does anyone else feel that the Phelps are exactly what a demon would create if it wanted to turn good people away from Christianity?

Want to help the clan die off? Offer a full scholarship to a first-rate secular university to any Phelps child who cuts ties to their family.
Give the kids a better option, and it's unlikely many of them will stick around.

WOW, that's total nonsense, perhaps the best of the day, especially considering the source.

You know among my ideas to at least **** on the phelps parade, one that would seem perfectly legal and actually doable is the " Freedom Reekers"

There is nothing illegal about smelling like 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag. And there is nothing illegal about standing by them.

So, i am thinking, get a decent group of people together, all not showering for a month plus, and beforehand getting a really good reek going ( milk showers, mayo in the pockets, eat a lot of gross cheese, i am sure you get the idea. ) And just be around them, don't get violent, heck don't even acknowledge them, just be disgusting.

Might not stop them from doing it, but it surely would put a rather large damper on their day. Kind of like a sit in, but more of a stink in.

This would also be neat for helping increase the membership of their church - send people well reeked to help fill the pews.:D:D:D:D:D

....great idea, lest they be fans of Carpenters songs.

They are a family of lawyers, but I doubt they finance their cult from lawsuits...they supposedly spend 200k a year on their travel budget. They must have some other income or family money.

I have requested a copy of their Form 990. We shall know how much money that pack of useless monkey spunk actually bring in, and where it comes from.

I will post it here when I get it.

I thought "churches" and "church-related organizations" were exempt. Has the law changed?
