If fire and impact were the true culprits, a series of joint and rigiity failure, piece by piece, section by section would fall, would fail...not all at once... anyone that's ever been involved in FEA and FEMA ..finite element analysis and failure mode effect analysis knows what the risk and potential for failure is and there is a rating scale up to ten.....

all building designs go through fea and fema and go through this every couple of years

so you found a picture of thin gauged steel that was bent by force...give the guy a happy meal somebody,, you npicture means nothing...the grade of steel used in rise is speficically designed and manfucature and rolled so that in no way, shape or form, can a hydro-carbon fire ever harm that steel


just look at the Beijing hotel fire from 2 weeks ago or any high or medium rise fire in the last 850 years

What??? The idea behind fireproofing on steel is to delay its heating to the point where it softens and loses load-bearing capacity. It's not some "doubling up" or "redundancy", it's an attempt to make an individual component of a structure survive long enough for either evacuation or firefighting efforts to arrive, and thus avoid jeopardizing an entire structure by failure of a critical component.

The US code has a standard - ASTM E119 - against which steel building elements are tested against, and I'm sure Architect or one of the European engineers around here can tell us what the corresponding Eurocode is. The point is that fire resistance coatings are not just some add on element, but an important, integral component in ensuring that a building meets code and properly resists failure long enough for either occupant rescue or fire extinguishing efforts. Trying to portray it in some other light betrays an ignorance of why it's applied.

You really, really need to research before you post. I'm not even an engineer, and I still understand this point. It's not a hard point to grasp, seeing as how it's one of the elements of buildings construction codes and therefore readily available.

Well, I'll take it that you don't consider the folks who contributed to the NIST report educated experts, obviously, or the folks at Perdue, etc, so can you define the term educated experts so we have a starting point? I suspect your little group of 'educated experts' has you in it. Is that a good start? Can you give me other educated experts?
 
nonsense...you have never looked at the application of fire proofing of steel--you don't know what is acceptable, what is required, what is suggested...where it is used and when within the building structure itself......stop with the fire proofing crap already, you are fast becomming non-essential to this group and it's discussion...
