Splitsville?: North Carolina and Indiana Primaries

With 72% of precincts reporting, CNN isn't calling Indiana yet. Right now Hillary is winning 52-48.

NC is 57-41 with 47% of the vote counted. If it stays close to that, Obama's win is bigger.

Man they've got this gap in IN down to 35,000 votes. Three point something percent.

I don't think I've ever seen the networks call a race this far apart before, usually once one comes in they all start calling it like dominoes.

Obama up by 14 in NC now, which brings that race right in line with the polling. 12-15 points is what it's been for months.

According to the BBC, some Indiana districts are holding back from declaring their results. Districts that support Obama.

Given the rather close race in Indiana (Hillary has a 4% lead, with 85% counted), might they be waiting to declare after Hillary gives her victory speech, knowing that their results would tip it for Obama?

Well... he's down by 40,000 with only about 140,000 left to count. So he would have to win that last district by an absolute atomic blowout to make up the gap.

Usually they're not so shy about calling races like that but... here we are.

Yeah, it would have to be a pretty massive blowout for Obama. More likely they held off declaring their votes just to force Clinton to delay her victory speech, if there was anything malicious about it.

Wikipedia on Lake County Indiana

Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population was 484,564, making it Indiana's second most populous county. The county seat is Crown Point[1]. This county is part of Northwest Indiana and the Chicago metropolitan area.
According to 2005 Census estimates 58.6% of Lake County's population was non-Hispanic whites, 26.2% African-American, 13.7% Latino and 1.0% Asian.[5]

96% of NC precincts have reported, so I think its safe to say that Obama won by about 56-42 (14 points) and about 220,000 "popular votes."

If roughly half of the white people in Lake County, IA are republicans and 90% of African Americans are democrats, then close to half the voters in the democratic half of the primary might be African Americans. That could be enough to close the gap significantly, although it would be tough for Obama to overtake Clinton, I expect.

MSNBC says the reason for the delay in Indiana is that they are waiting for the count from Gary, which is in a heavily black county, and Indiana University.

The Gary count may not be in until after midnight. The mayor of Gary is saying that the turnout could have been enough to turn the state for Obama.

This is the most exciting primary contest I've ever seen. That county holds out its votes purely to build the tension.
