Some thoughts about the Mohammed Cartoons

Satirize anything you want. Just not the Prophet of Islam.

How does your belief system dictate your lifestyle any more than it dictated the lifestyles of communists or national socialists?

How does your prophet dictate you 24/7 any more than a drill sergent in the marines?

Anyone else here? Can you think of some things that are as strong and still satarised?

Sunni man, when travelling I try to respect the culture of customs of wherever I am.

I"m planning on travelling in several Middle Eastern countries next winter.

I'm buying linen pants, conservative scarf, and not packing any tank tops. I plan to follow local customs where addressing people, and knowing that each country deserves respect for the culture they have chosen. Religions deserve respect, and I'm not going to be wearing a Cross or carrying a Bible (and yes I am a Xian).

I'm not going to go and say "you know, why don't you let women drive cars?" or "it's really hot, I'd like to wear some capris". If I want to drive or wear some capris, I'll go somewhere else. But I want to be in these countries and enjoy all they have to offer. As a trade off, I'll wear long pants and a head scarf when needed. Because I want to be a good guest, and I think cultures and beliefs deserve respect. And if I'm going to be benefitting from being in these countries, I'm going to not try to change things. If I ever move to one of these wonderful nations, my job will be to say "hey the reason I moved here is that I like it (or have found a job)". I'm not going to move there and change things to fit MY culture and my sensibilities.

For those that move to countries that have long histories of tolerance and a seperation of religion and government, well there are people that move there for economic and other reasons. Included in those reasons are tolerance for thier own relgious beliefs. Think of many Middle Eastern nations, there is great religious unhappiness between even different Islamic groups! But in most European nations and the US, religious tolerance is expected (and while imperfect we don't have too many killings based on religion). Part of living in some countries in the West is having to accept the way it is. Not change it to how you want it to be. Education, interacting with others, enjoying the things about where you are living...

Lots of negatives to living in the US and Europe. Drug use, prejudice, crime...any place you live is a trade off.

But one of the big pluses is freedom of speech. Without it, foundations collapse.

But didn't the US media in general decide that the JyllandsPosten Cartoons were not to be shown? Yeah, they did.

Isn't that bending over backwards (or, rather, forwards) to the fundamentalists?

Now...

Just to make it clear: I'm not picking on Muslims in particular. This goes for all religious fanatics. We see the same with radical religious people of any religion. But, for the sake of this particular example (and I'm Danish, so I have a vested interest in this):

The thing I really don't get about all this "insulting our Prophet" is that...why do they care what non-Muslims say?

All who are not Muslims are infidels anyway. They are lost, not to be reckoned with. Whether they believe in another god or no god at all should make no difference. The key issue is, do you believe in their god, or don't you?

So, what is the difference between:

Worshipping some other god(s) than the one they believe in

and

Mocking the god they believe in

?

Isn't not worshiping the god they believe in the ultimate insult?

Yes, US media bending over for any group gets it put up them where they deserve for doing it.:) Of course that's true for media in other locations also.:D

OK, I call troll. That's one cliche too many.

I was thinking the same thing. If not a troll, somebody who seems to be going out of his way to come off badly.

I'm at least suspicious.

Now I understand why DD changed his avatar back to the cartoon. Earlier today it was a flag.

If someone made a filthy cartoon about your mother and then stuck it in your face. Would you be mad? Same thing!

Some rectum-headed religious jack-off is not my mother - and I could care less if the cartoons are jeebus mo'hammudd or krsya. They're all a pile of fecal material worshipped by people in dire need of a good education.

It's not by a long shot the same thing (by the by, my mother and I would quite honestly laugh at it if someone did - she's a fun person with a large sense of humor). Something certain people are in large need of.

Certainly hope I haven't offended you!!!:D:D:D:D:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think if Muslim women were not so bitchy and showed a little skin and had sex once in a while, Muslim men would not be so violent nor anal retentive.

ETA Is that your problem SM? Are you sexually repressed?

Women needing to cover up surely implies rather unsavoury things about the men in their community...

Sure does...but I do agree that alot of women in the middle east have extremely beautiful eyes but that could be simply due to the fact that that is all you usually see.

With the great attitude you have Kittynh. I think you will have a wonderful time!

We aren't being dictated to at all.

We just have a moral and religious framework that we live and work in.

I , on the other hand, have no respect for, and no intention of visiting, any culture operating like 1000 years past primitives. I refer to the laughable "justice" systems largely (actually, I do not find it laughable - it makes me think of the pleasure of machine gunning people who order women whipped or raped or killed for nothing at all - and their families that support it or do it themselves. There used to be a real culture there in that place - even in M's time, but that is long gone.

That's good information for everyone to know.

I will file it under, "I could care less what you think"!

Do you think that independent thought should be controlled by the religious authorities?
