Some Immigrants...

Can become heroes. When Mamoudou Gassama, a French immigrant from Mali, spotted a four-year-old child dangling from a balcony in Paris, he didn't hesitate. He quickly climbed the facade of the building four stories up and rescued the youngster:

Gassama has been granted French citizenship and given a job in the Paris Fire Brigade.

Finally, a thread we can all enjoy.

Lots to be happy about:

* Impressive climbing skills and a great sense of duty

* No dead/injured baby

* Gassama has been granted French citizenship and given a job in the Paris Fire Brigade

That was tremendous.

I know some people are cynical about people in general, but I remember 9/11, when, after the storm of concrete and dust, most people went towards the collapse.

People are usually better than we give them credit. We (yes, we, all of us) focus on the aberrant behavior, ignoring the everyday people who are there for others.

In the U.S. he would have been shot by a white cop for trying to kidnap the child.

Wouldn’t trespassing be an offence worthy of being shot?

What a great story. I do wonder why the neighbours, who were holding the kid, didn’t lift him over the balcony. He looked like he weighed only a few kilograms.

Hard to tell from the video but it looks as if the person holding the kid had him only by one arm, and might not have had a good opportunity to shift his position without risking dropping, and might not have had a good angle for pulling up without damaging the kid.

We know enough about the mean old world that we don't have to bring up the counter examples every time. Sufficient unto the day, etc. For now, I'm happy to settle for a nice story with all good guys and a happy ending.

An offense isn't necessary for some white cops to shoot a black man. As for the neighbors, I don't think they could get a good hold on him because he was squirming. It looks like there's a wall between them and the kid, and he wasn't quite close enough.

Great story, and good on Macron for giving him citizenship too. No doubt he'll make an excellent addition to the Paris Fire Brigade.

The neighbour wasn't on the balcony when the guy started climbing. He only came out to see what all the shouting was about when the other guy was half way up, then saw the kid and grabbed his wrist. I don't think he could actually pull him up from that angle though and there was a metal gate stopping him from getting onto the balcony next door.

Oh no, I’m not belittling the effort at all. I do think that some people are so terrified of getting involved due to liability issues and so on, they freeze up. Or, as others have pointed out, they may not have had a good enough grip.

Still a wonderful story.

Yeah, good points. Fair enough.

Aww shucks, we should just let them all in, right!

Is anyone denying some immigrants can be heroes or just plain old good people? Even a total a-hole might rescue a baby in distress.

Great someone rescued a child, I'm sincerely happy, but so what? Should I get all goose-pimply over it and rethink my strategy for border security on my side of the planet?

I had a great day outside today, met some great people, I'm in a great mood. Doesn't change my attitude about illegal aliens and neither does this thread. I'm not surprised at all that an illegal or drug dealer or anyone else would rescue a child.

I'm also okay that he got a pass for doing so. That's just one guy. How about the woman here who taped cocaine beneath her kids clothes and tried to smuggle them in? *********** hero.

Please remember to type all swear words out in full and spell them correctly in the public sections to allow the autocensor to do its magic.

I think the problem is that some people (like Trump) demonise each and every asylum seeker.

Could you please point out where someone in this thread suggested this?

Next time this happens, we'll call you.

We probably shouldn't post any 'good guys with a gun' or 'drinking while white', either. Wouldn't want to upset the forum balance.

Yeah, but maybe he doesn't want to be a fireman. Does he have to be a fireman now? Sounds like a dangerous job!
