Somali pirates kill all 4 hostages

What a sad story. Apparently they knew it was dangerous but "thought it would be ok".

What's strange about this is this:

Still, in a decision that troubled friends and family members, the Quest had departed from a convoy of yachts that was assembled to ward off attacks by pirates in those waters — such maritime convoys are known as rallies — to go off on their own into some of the most dangerous waters in the world.

Source.

They had apparently joined the rally specifically in order to go through these dangerous waters, but for some reason decided to go off on their own.

I'm pretty pro-firearm (had a CCW when I was in Florida, couple of pistols, etc..) but even though my future plans/dreams include sailing around a bit, I don't plan on having a firearm on board. The problem with guns on board is that there are many many places that don't allow guns to be brought in/carried/stored on board, and these places are places you want to go when sailing. Sure, you can try to sneak it in... and risk incarceration and/or confiscation of your vessel if it's found. Easier solution is to look on Noonsite for where the pirate "danger zones" are... and DON'T GO THERE.

These poor schlumpfs were missionaries.
Distributing bibles.
Doing the Lord's work.
Look at their reward.

Don't be sorry - when I heard a US ship was following the slime and they were headed towards a particular Somali port, my first reaction was "Why aren't they bombing that port out of existance right now?" We know where they come from, we know where they are supported.........

Somalia's a failed state. Just as an abandoned house succumbs to vermin, pests, and damage, so does a state unable to govern itself. Burning it down will not improve the neighborhood. What needs to be done is for the property to pass into hands capable of cleaning it up and maintaining it.

In other words, Somalia's a problem that will continue (and worsen) until either a) it gets its act together (unlikely) or b) somebody else conquers it, occupies it, and restores order. Since the powerful nations capable of doing so aren't (possibly because they're tired of being criticized as imperialists, but more likely because they don't see any advantage in doing so at this time) responsiblity falls to the neighboring countries to band together and clean up their own neighborhood. I wish them luck.

Never missing a chance to plug our fine Dutch defence products:

The Goalkeeper.

Gunboat diplomacy minus the diplomacy.

I'll take three please :) Can you imagine if one of those opened up on one of those little dinghys the pirates board the ships with? It wouldn't just destroy the ship and crew, but they would cease to exist in solid form. Awesome.

or they where killed by the military in the botched rescue cause the military would never lie would they?

Yes, let's assume the military is covering up a botched rescue without any evidence of said botched rescue. That is what we do here at JREF, we make baseless assumptions from personal biases.

Fills in the day.
Actually several of the pirates had abandoned the yacht and surrendered before the boarding.
Apparently there was a rift in the pirate band as to the best course of action.
Whether before or after the hostages were murdered, isn't firmed up yet.

Actually that's not so rare as your sarcasm implies, I'm afraid.

I have always maintained to to fight piracy remove and destroy all the boats/ships from that countries shoreline.
No boats, no piracy

I have asked this question irl a few times and not got a satisfactory answer.

Why does someone not capitalize on this and run an anti pirate type of security force. They seem to have lots of people who are willing to use guns and know how to boat, so how on earth have a bunch of these guys not, instead of going the pirate route, sell themselves to wealthy idiots and fight the pirates?

I mean it would seem to me, to be a more consistent source of income, and your not fighting every law enforcement agency. Even if they were not regulated, or even legal, i am sure that authorities would turn a blind eye if they were effective and not overly psychotic.

Killing hostages "has now become part of our rules," said a pirate who identified himself as Muse Abdi....

From now on, anyone who tries to rescue the hostages in our hands will only collect dead bodies," he said. "It will never ever happen that hostages are rescued and we are hauled to prison.

Sadly we can't bomb all of the ports, there are too many tiny beaches and coves. We also can't just destroy all the boats, many people rely on fishing as their own source of income and food.

I think the word sadhatter is looking for is "privateer". It's possible that they could lessen the number of pirates by turning them against each other. However they would have to be very careful about how and what the privateers are payed for.

Really, if there was a good answer for all this mess the governments of the world would have come up with it by now. Large civilized governments have been trying to deal with pirates all throughout history.

They had a boat full of bibles and thought Jesus would protect them. Unfortuantely, Jesus apparently had other plans for them.

Fish gotta eat too.

Exactly. If you just pay them per severed hand they could cheat, so you have to specify left or right hand. And you could probably get 2 or 3 scalps off a single head so that's a no-go, and heads themselves are too big and clunky.

Maybe a nose could be considered proof the pirate was permanently dispatched?
