Shrien Dewani - Honeymoon murder

Shrien Dewani is scheduled to be extradited to South Africa on April 7 according to a statement released by the South African government.
.
.

I suspect that is no more than the date stipulated in the most recent order. As I understand it he isn't out of appeals yet.

SA only had 28 days from 3rd March to extradite him, taking them to 31st March. I have seen on the FB page that some extension of 14 days was sought by Dewani and agreed by the SA authorities and they are suggesting that this is a trick by Dewani's team to then lodge another appeal on the basis that the time stipulated by court order has passed. We shall see I suppose.

I'm still convinced hat he will pull a sickie stunt prior to going, but I hope I am wrong.

I guess he is seeking permission for a further appeal and that explains the 14 day extension.

He's off tomorrow

Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani will board a plane for South Africa tomorrow night after a three-and-a-half year battle – and the world will finally learn whether the mental illness which delayed his extradition is real or faked.

He's as good as convicted.

Now he's going to have to hope for a rag-tag bunch of supporters to pry his ass out post-conviction, like Lindy Chamberlain and Amanda Knox.

Why do you think so? From the clips I've seen and from reading the thread, Pistorius seems to be getting a fair shake. I have more faith in the South African legal profession and judiciary than their police. They won't have a confession (Knox) but they will have mass hysteria (Chamberlain) and the honour of South Africa being at stake. Who knows? Maybe the evidence will come into it somewhere.

I'm a lot less certain about his innocence than I am about Knox and Chamberlain. However, that may change as we get more information about the detail of the evidence. Court cases tend to shed a lot of light, even if it's not in the areas the main players would like.

Rolfe.

Given that Chamberlain was quite obviously innocent, and shown to have been convicted by popular hysteria and pseudo-science does that mean that you consider Dewani will be wrongly convicted?

They will put on a dog and pony show that looks convincingly like a fair trial. Evidence (or lack thereof) will seem to matter greatly, right up to the inevitable guilty verdict, at which point it will not matter at all.

You have my firm prediction, on record.

If I'm wrong... remember this post and never let me forget it for a second. You will be doing me a service, because I hate being right about these things and I wish devoutly that I could be wrong.

Don't worry. I will remember it. Predicting the outcome of legal proceedings is sheer folly, which doesn't mean this prediction will prove to be wrong of course, only that the our puny little minds can never encompass and compute all the imponderables.

Having said all that, and for the heck of it, I shall predict acquittal :D taking my cue from your good self and the complete absence of any credible evidence against him. I shall join you in grizzled cynicism if wrong.

I well remember your bleak and accurate prediction that Nencini would rubber stamp ISC on Kercher. RIP my optimism.

I have to say that case is quite a good one for the pro-guilt lobby. It's on all fours with Dewani and shows the power of cultural pressure. It has converted me on motive, although my position has never really centred on lack thereof. Now all we need is some evidence. Oh yeah, Zola Tongo. Good enough for lane99.

The crime you allege is a police conspiracy.

I allege a police conspiracy. It follows from my belief that Shrien is innocent. If he is innocent there cannot have been an agreed price of R15000 for a hit and in that case there cannot be two people (Qwabe and Tongo) claiming that was the agreed price by chance. There must be something to explain how they both arrived at this mythical number and that something is the SA police.

As you have more faith in the system than the police

what is the motive for the police? Do you still think it is tourism? The police were so concerned that the world would stop taking holidays in South Africa because of the crime rate to the extent that they would prefer to look like a country where you could come an hire a local to take out your wife?

Did this conspiracy go up the chain of command? Did the police develop this motive by themselves? or did it go up further? How far? How many people were involved? If they had to suggest the idea to Tongo, wasn't that a silly thing to do given that the suspect they had implicated had already left the country?
