Just once, I'd like to see a definition of "Conservative" which has more of a basis in reality, rather than as a convenient catch-all for greed, stupidity, and intellectual cowardice.

Please don´t take this personally, but... just once I´d like to see those who claim others aren´t really X to call out these "false" X´s and/or throw them out of the X-group, rather than complaining about being lumped together with them.

As long as "real conservatives" allow people like Limbaugh, Coulter or Beck to call themselves conservatives and spread their venom under the uncontested label of conservatism, I see nothing wrong with calling these venom-spewers conservatives, and I have little sympathy with "real conservatives" who don´t like to be associated with the venom-spewers, but don´t do anything about them, either.

Unsurprisingly, no reply from dudalb, who apparently thinks that self-proclaimed centrism means a free pass from the expectation that claims be supported.

I am being driven insane by the atitude that is so common in the Politics forum that "Everyone on my side is intelligent and/or reasonable, but Everyone on the other side is stupid and/or crazy". In other words, all the extremists are on the OTHER side.

I have no problem with that statement, in fact I agree wholeheartedly that the biggest problem with Islamic extremism is that so called moderates tend to excuse it or give implicit support.

The case for conservatives and Islamic extremists giving implicit support to nut jobs only to deny the association when called out is a good deal more developed then just identifying a group and pointing to radicals within it. The key (though perhaps not the only) difference is that the leaders of the nutjobs directly or indirectly carry significant weight within the group being discussed.

I think Beck's "Teddy Roosevelt was a Commie" routine was where many conservatives split the blanket with him.
