Ingratitude, Thy Name Is South Korea

For decades, there have been anti-U.S. demonstrations in South Korea. And each time I wonder the same thing: Do these people have any idea what the living hell known as North Korea is like? Do these people understand that the United States is the reason they are so free and prosperous, completely unlike their fellow North Koreans who had the horrible luck not to be liberated by America? Do these people know how many Americans died to enable them to be free?

...Here is a suggestion: The South Korean government should conduct a national plebiscite on whether America should withdraw its troops from that country. Before the South Korean people vote, the United States should make it clear that if it withdraws its troops and North Korea later invades the South, we will send no troops to die again for South Korea -- but we will vote to condemn North Korea's aggression at the United Nations.

If a majority of the South Korean people wants us to leave, we should.
I agree.

But how will we ever match their Starcraft skill if we leave?

Seems fair enough to me, but I suspect the Americans are worried about losing influence in the region to China, and that it is at least partially what motivates the presence in South Korea.

I think South Korea would win if North Korea invaded even without US assistance, as its army is better trained and more modern. But it would be a very bloody affair indeed.

its a no brainer.
u.s. imperialism is evil.

From the article:
Whenever I confront someone who claims that America's wars abroad were fought for economic gain or to extend its alleged imperialist empire, I ask the person about the Korean War: What imperialist or economic reasons were there to fight in that country?

that reason is china. simple.
this is a prime example of american imperialism.

sorry...i just noticed this is a dennis prager thread.........toooooooo funny.
prager is a moron.

well then SK were better off with the US "empire". can they stay independent without the US? can they defend themself against a china backed NK invasion?

bikerdruid,
Are you a supporter of North Korean communism?
Which do you consider to be a superior society; North Korea or South Korea?

North Korea is the best Korea. I know this because Kim Jong Il told me so.

As a soldier in Korea, I actually had friends that were anti-American students over there. I do think that it is time for the US to leave since South Korea is able to defend itself. Maybe a base in Pusan with an agreement to defend them in case of attack. Many Koreans do appreciate what we have done for them. These would be the conservative ones, farmers, and people involved in defense. American bases bring some economic activity, but they do breed crime and American soldiers are by no means diplomats. They cannot help but do things that cause resentment. Especially when drunk, which is most of the time they are on leave.
