Medical use should be legalized (monitored and enforced by the FDA) and non-medical possession and sale of small amounts should be de-criminalized.

It has been conclusively shown that people who start out innocently smoking a joint may become heroin junkies.

It has been conclusively shown that people who start out innocently drinking milk may become heroin junkies. What's even worse is, so far as is known, 100% of all people who have ever drunk water have either already died, or will die.

...so says the Beatles fan.

What strikes me amusing is that I'm a vociferous Grateful Dead fan. Never heard of one (aside from the Wharf Rats) being uptight about herbs.

What does a Deadhead say when the pot wears off?

I am talking across the board although I gave a choice of, "medical use only".
I do realize that in some states medical marijuana is already legal.
Obama said during his townhall internet meeting that he wouldn't consider this.
I guess I can why, although its too bad.

I think you'll find overwhelming support for legalization in this forum, but it's still not safe for a national politician to be for legalization because there's not a critical mass of people that favor it yet. Most people don't realize the economic and social benefits. Obama didn't actually give a reason or rationale for his opposition, but I presume the real reason is political positioning: It wouldn't be good for the serious, sober, moderate image he wants to present to the electorate.

It's time to get out of this outmoded way of thinking that drugs are THE problem. They are A problem. One made hundreds of times worse by their illegal status. How many gangs are peddling booze again?

Also Obama was quite flippant with his answer to the question. It only "seems silly" because people aren't thinking about the actual question and what effects it would have. They just see "legalize pot" and dismiss it as a bunch of stoner kids asking to not worry about going to jail. Legalizing it would kill several birds with one stone and what exactly would be the downside? More space in our jails? Less gang violence? More money not coming out of my pocket on the war on drugs? More money going to the government, again not out of my pocket? Less of a chance of drug money funding terrorists? Cops having time to go after more serious problems? People are scared kids will be getting their hands on it? Let me tell you a secret: Kids get their hands on it now. And from much more dangerous people than a clerk at 7-11.
