For me the repeated stories of the TSA doing terrible things in the name of security make me distinctly less willing to fly. Every plane trip I've taken in recent years (and there haven't been that many) has been for a more "serious" event than just a vacation. At this point I don't even consider just jumping on a plane to go somewhere for a weekend. The addition of the scanners makes me even less willing to travel. Required (or even likely) body cavity searches would put me into the "only in direst emergency" camp for flying. "Sorry I can't come to the funeral, don't want a guy sticking his fingers up my pupr."
I wonder how big an effect the TSA is having on number of flyers. Certainly seems like there's a lot of people who no longer fly for fun, and the scanners are likely to make a lot more (particularly once large numbers of their "impossible to record" images leak out. ). I'm betting there are already web domains reserved to host them. "Natalie Portman at O'hare! JFK! Dulles!"
Amusing to think that the same politicians who are so nominally pro-business and anti-regulation are also so pro-government security forces which are actively hurting an industry.
