Shooting in Sydney (Australia) - Developing Story

It's just been reported that a classmate of the killer was arrested on the way to school. Interesting.

Several posts discussing US gun laws have been moved to AAH. There are several threads discussing US gun laws.

If you want to compare the gun law in different jurisdictions, then by all means open a new thread rather than hijacking one concentrating on a particular news event.

Now please return to discussing this shooting in Australia.

Looks like your gun laws did nothing, you can't even recognize that, you're in denial.

Does a violation of ANY law mean that said laws do nothing? Or should the effectiveness of a law be determined by the overall reduction of the behaviour that it prohibits?

There are laws against driving while impaired. Do we gauge their effectiveness by the reduction in the incidents of drunk driving over time, or do we declare them a failure because Uncle Bob got all liquored up and drove home from the pub?

I'm sure you have no problem betting your life on it, and I'm fine with it too. :)

The fact that ONE guy shot ONE victim totally is the same as all the mass shootings we have in the US, yep. Proves gun laws don't work, yep.

I'd insult you, but it would do no good.

Latest updates:

Police have confirmed the supply of a firearm to a 15-year-old terrorist is central to the investigation into the murder of a police employee outside NSW police headquarters on Friday.

Deputy NSW Police Commissioner Catherine Burn confirmed five arrests were made in raids across homes in Sydney's west from 6am this morning in relation to the fatal shooting of Curtis Cheng, with four people currently in custody.

It is however much easier for the police to investigate this because they don't have to worry about the possibility that the gun was purchased in a supermarket.

Further update:

A report claims two teenage brothers allegedly provided the gun schoolboy killer Farhad Jabar used to execute police worker Curtis Cheng outside Parramatta's police headquarters last Friday afternoon.

The Daily Telegraph reports police understand a notorious Sydney Middle Eastern gang supplied the silver .38 calibre Smith and Wesson revolver used by 15-year-old Jabar to carry out the terror attack.

That's interesting. It appears that in Oz, when an illegal gun is used, the police investigate where it came from and may find other perpetrators. I wonder if that would work in the US?

That's pretty much how it works in the UK.
A fair number of UK gun crime is committed by criminals making do with reactivated blank-firing pistols, or modified starting pistols, and refilled ammunition. The same firearm tends to be used in multiple crimes - again due to the difficulty in getting hold of them.

Not likely. Selling someone a gun isn't a crime here, unless you know they're going to use it for nefarious purposes or know that they're not legally allowed to own one (ex-con, etc).

An interesting development:

Parramatta Mosque chairman Neil El-Kadomi has a short and simple message for Muslims who don't respect Australian values.

"If you don't like Australia, leave it."

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a...ustralia-leave-it-parramatta-mosque-chairman/

The reason this development is interesting is because the phrase used is one more commonly associated with racists. It will be interesting to see how the 'usual suspects' on the Left will respond to this, if they bother to at all.

One person shooting a Police Public Servant in Australia is such an unusual event that it got National Coverage, and the sort of TV and newspaper coverage that only happens in the USA when 10 or more are killed.

I think that there is a tad of a difference here.

And if we had real freedom in Australia, people would be free to arm up to protect themselves against continued random attacks rather than simply becoming a statistic.

The Forum has a nifty (and apparently little-known) way of doing this.

Devil's Advocate: "
