The Parramatta Mosque has been raided overnight, a senior police source has told the ABC, as investigations into Friday's fatal shooting of a civilian police force employee continue.

Farhad Jabar Khali Mohammad, 15, shot and killed 17-year police force veteran Curtis Cheng at close range outside the Parramatta police headquarters.

...

Police said the warrant was undertaken by arrangement with leadership at the mosque, who gave their full assistance to police.

Earlier, a police source said the teenager had been armed with a revolver and did not know Mr Cheng.

And before anyone states that this proves that Gun Control does not work, nobody ever guaranteed that it would stop people shooting one another, it just makes it much harder for people to do so.

Indeed. The big question is where he got the handgun from. It wouldn't be surprising if IS or a similar group of jihadis played a role in this. The police responded well, preventing further killings.

My son-in-law is a Drug Squad cop, and participates in raids on Outlaw Bikie Gangs. He said today that he's more worried about lone wolf, radicalised terrorists than gangs. He is also of the view that overseas jihadi groups would have played a role in arming the kid.

I think, though, that a cop is more entitled to be worried than very, very slightly worried. All NSW cops were told well before this incident to be armed at all times, including in their offices. They suspected some attack was going to happen in western Sydney, where Parramatta is.

Is this incident the sort of attack they were suspecting, or...?

Lol

Maybe from a criminal source.

Is your country getting any new immigrants? I'm glad your population will be able to protect themselves since anyone can get a gun.

Did you guys ever think that the cops did such a good job maybe because they were 20 fricking feet away! ;)

I certainly hope certain evil fundamentalist religion of peace types don't realize how totally disarmed your country is. ;)

Cops are armed. They did the job here.

Your lack of knowledge of Australia is embarrassing. Sure you don't need to know anything - unless you are posting about it.....

Your reading comprehension is embarrassing, where did I say they weren't armed? I merely pointed out that they did such a good job because it happened right where they were, its a miracle it didn't happen 5 miles away. ;)

Cops have these things called "cars", and they perform actions called "patrols". So if it had happened 5 miles away it would likely have ended in a similar manner.

From the news reports it sounded like he wanted a shootout with the police.

I thank the fact our gun laws likely made it very difficult for him to obtain a weapon that could have allowed him to efficiently gun down additional people.

Perhaps logger should be reminded that Australia had a string of gun massacres culminating in Port Arthur, with most culprits using semi-automatics. Since the restriction of these guns, no gun massacres.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/crime/20...hooting_could_australia_s_laws_provide_a.html

On April 28, 1996, a gunman opened fire on tourists in a seaside resort in Port Arthur, Tasmania. By the time he was finished, he had killed 35 people and wounded 23 more. It was the worst mass murder in Australia’s history.

Twelve days later, Australia’s government did something remarkable. Led by newly elected conservative Prime Minister John Howard, it announced a bipartisan deal with state and local governments to enact sweeping gun-control measures. A decade and a half hence, the results of these policy changes are clear: They worked really, really well.

I doubt he will open the link. It's not from a far right wing blogger.

What are "special constables"?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_constable#Australia
wikipedia said:
In the Australian state of New South Wales, Special Constables may be appointed by a Magistrate or two Justices of the Peace where "tumult, riot, or serious indictable offence has taken place, or may be reasonably apprehended" and the Magistrate or Justices believe that "the ordinary Constables or officers appointed for preserving the peace are not sufficient for the preservation of the peace, and for the protection of the inhabitants and the security of their property, or for the apprehension of offenders". Special Constables, as appointed under the Police (Special Provisions) Act 1901, have the same powers as Constables of the New South Wales Police Force. Similar provisions apply in other Australian states.

Inspectors of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are generally appointed as Special Constables.

Members of police bands are also appointed as Special Constables.

State police stationed near their state borders are sometimes assigned the status of Special Constable in the neighbouring state to allow hot pursuit of offenders across state borders and lawful arrest on the other side.

Special Constables are also employed by various local government agencies in New South Wales including the RSPCA (Australia Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), local councils, RailCorp and NSW Health to enforce such laws such as cruelty to animals, parking, enforce railway laws and prevent disorder in certain circumstances. The NSW Police Force employs Special Constables as an armed internal security force. This special internal unit provides protective services to government departments such as the Premier's Office, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), the Governor of New South Wales and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). They also protect covert police locations and have a mobile rapid deployment team (MIST – Major Incident Security Team) with advanced firearms and defensive tactics training, for special assignments.

In the 2015 Parramatta shooting, three Special Constables responded to the killing of police accountant Curtis Cheng outside the Parramatta Police Station on 2 October 2015, returning gunfire directed at them and killing the assailant, Farad Jabar Khalil Mohammad (aged 15)

I doubt they'll even acknowledge that the link exists, it doesn't confirm his preconceived notion that gun bans don't work.

I'm sure you have no problem betting your life on it, and I'm fine with it too. :)

Looks like your gun laws did nothing, you can't even recognize that, you're in denial.

To get this thread somewhat back on topic:

Police are investigating links between the teenage Parramatta shooter and a local mosque and Islamic bookstore after a police employee was executed on a Sydney street.

Detectives are also focusing on how 15-year-old Farhad Jabar came into possession of the handgun he used to kill 58-year-old Curtis Cheng outside NSW Police's Parramatta headquarters last Friday afternoon.
