"The Library of Congress announced Wednesday that, thanks to MacFarlane's generosity, it has acquired the personal papers of the late scientist and astronomer, who spoke to mass audiences about the mysteries of the universe and the origins of life. While MacFarlane never owned Sagan's papers, he covered the undisclosed costs of donating them to the library.

"All I did was write a check, but it's something that was, to me, worth every penny," MacFarlane told The Associated Press by phone from Los Angeles. "He's a man whose life's work should be accessible to everybody."

Very cool move.

Whether you like his form of comedy or not, he's just a cool guy.

He's also producing the new version Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson.

What did it cost him?

Probably thousands and thousands.

The article never says who owned them. Cornell? Ann Druyan? Did MacFarlane simply pay for the move/storage/preservation?

I heard something on the TV news yesterday that he bought them directly from Sagan's widow. Don't know how valid that comment was though.

Man, I hate it when someone I don't like does something I do like!!

Really!?!? I'd heard that he was in talks to produce the show but I didn't know it was confirmed. If Tyson is on board that's just gravy!

Yes!

And the children dance!!!

(Sorry for the nerdgasam, but I've been watching the old Cosmos on Netflix with my son & its been so much fun ... probably will be even more fun once he's old enough to understand what's being said. He does smile & giggle a lot though, especially during the episode about Kepler.)

From what I read/saw somewhere, this is why he's not doing Nova anymore. Well, officially he is on "hiatus", so I suppose he could go back if this doesn't work out.

I would presume it's more of a case that Mr. Tyson is a fairly busy fellow, and since shooting a television program can take up a considerable amount of time, while doing the new Cosmos series he simply doesn't have the time available to also work on another.

And the new Cosmos will air on a commercial television network. While Tyson seems like a great guy who's in it for the science, doing Cosmos has got to pay a lot better than doing Nova. ;)
