Sen. Feinstein denied endorsement by CA Democrats

Feinstein is so hated by the right that I find it amusing to hear her called a "Republican-lite".

Well Obama is in the same camp as Feinstein, more or less, and he considers himself an "80s Republican"

If the Republicans don't think so that's their problem.

Gavin Newsome (Our next Governor) and Kevin de León had a political pretty boy purse fight over who was going to save California from the gunz and De Leon lost - he passed bills in the Assembly but Newsome put "Safety for All" on the Ballot.

Safety hasn't been improved but Newsome begged money like there is no tomorrow for the SFA vote and what wasn't spent...was rolled over into his campaign for Governor.

Perfectly legal.

Yeah, they put their homeless on buses to San Francisco. At some point someone has to end up dealing with them and with so many cities just shipping their homeless out to California we end up having to be the end of the line in dealing with them.

That would be a Hard Left. But I don't recall that being what the progressive arm is advocating for.

It is SF that is inviting them. If states are paying for the homeless to hop on a bus and go to SF that would be news to me a good idea for that state. That actually sounds familiar though so I'm gonna hold off on saying it's 100% bull :) But all the goodies SF provides are more than enough reason to go.

San Francisco has created this problem. San Jose is getting there too. I drive there every few days and 7th street (for one) is lined with homeless in front of businesses on both sides of the street. Tents, tarps, busted up cars, and a lot of garbage.

The 680 freeway has homeless camps up high on the embankment and all their junk is littered below. They are all over downtown and it is a very big area.

And most of the ones I see appear to be in bad mental shape. I saw a guy run out into the street and try to throw a burning book of matches into the car in front of me through the window.

People are taking dumps and pissing on the side of downtown streets in plain site.

We can't get them off the street, the hospitals were closed decades ago and the street is where many ended up. The old Agnew's hospital is now Sun Micro.

San Jose Police Dept closed the substation on the south side of the city because it couldn't afford it. Years ago. Something is wrong with our priorities, and btw where is all the cash going?

I understand it enough. I had a chat with the WA Judiary Chairman in her Tacoma office a few years ago about a gun control bill she didn't like; it eased restrictions. I watched her kill the bill twice (in person), then watched her on TV support the same bill after it was plucked out of her committee and brought to the floor. :) It's a dirty little game at times.

de Leon is a bit backhanded as quoted in the article; he won't get to the Senate unless he is.

This is why the legislative is always the least popular branch of government. It's the only one of the three branches where they make the sausage in public view.

Polls will close 8:00 p.m. PST. The top two (from any party) will go on to the General election in November.

Yep and the evil bitch (and her husband, the luckiest contractor ever) is going to win anyways. Might be "good" because her opponents are looking even worse.

We are so screwed here. Gavin Newsom? Look what he did to San Francisco!

And we have these great projects:

A slow Bullet Train to nowhere - 100 Billion plus if it's ever completed.

Tunnels under the Delta - 2 of them 40 feet in diameter to deliver water away from the all important delta - projected to cost 60 billion easily. This better not happen.

Billions in state worker pensions - can't afford them!

Where in the hell is all the money coming from? The illegals that live in the Sanctuary Cities? The homeless population that is rapidly expanding? MS-13? The working people who can't afford rent?

Dude...

So now it's another Democrat vs Democrat senate race in California.
I am not so sure the "Jungle Primary" is working as intended...

I think someone'e dislike of people with Brown Skins is showing...

Serioiusly just move out of California if it's going down the tube so fast.

Typical Angry White Kid Trump supporter.

If Feinstein wins, the chances of Cal having to have a special election before her Six year term is up is pretty high.....
Yes, I think she should have retired, for reasons of age and health if no other.

You can blame St. Ronnie Reagan for the dismantling of the state mental hospital system back when he was Governor.
It was a case of both sides being to blame.Reagan wanting to "Mainstream" patients because it saved money, and some liberals supporting it for messed up touchy feely reasons.

Hmm, I wonder of there will be a back lash from Gunmegeddon that will energise the Republicans in California? If the Dem voters stay home because of the slam dunkness, or the choice between Dwiddly Dumb and Dwiddle Dee. Not a presidential election year either. What was yesterday's turn out? 4m out of um 12m?

Expect more Bernie/Stein/"insurgent" type candidates to start springing up as the "controlled opposition" mounts up to disrupt the midterms.

To be fair, I am of two minds regarding this. On the one hand it's cruel to EVERYone to just put them on the streets. On the other, all the cases of abused patients were horrifying, and that was back when they were state institutions, not the private-run ones that we have now, which are far worse.

The palace at the end of this road is feudalism, I recon.

Don't be extreme. The peasants, er, i mean, workers, won't be bound to the land. They will be perfectly free to choose their own employer overlords. One employer may even entice high quality workers by providing fresh bread once a week instead of the usual allotment of stale crusts.

He did a lot of damage, all in the name of 'conservative values.' I kind of liked Reagan, though I never voted for him, but it is what it is. Back in 1986 the Manhattan apartment building I lived in had a serious fire and I suddenly found myself homeless. Not knowing exactly what to do I went to NY City Social Services to see what help might be available.

The social worker, a very nice man named Mr. Clarke, told me not much was available. We got into quite a conversation and he explained to me, the Reagan administration had cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal share of New York social service programs. Reagan needed the funds to pay for greatly expanding the military budget at a time when he was championing big tax cuts. Mr. Clarke offered to put me on a waiting list for a couple of programs but he warned me, they were not able to add anyone in the foreseeable future. He also suggested that I might try a New York State social service center on W. 34th Street.

Same thing. The woman told me that because of the "Reagan cuts," all the programs had become dramatically underfunded. She said she was sorry but the state was not even taking applications. That if she filled out an application anyway the computer system would not accept it. She said, given the current fiscal realities, it was pointless.

How do you know that once you left, they didn't turn around and give the same assistance to a friend of theirs?

Ya, how do we even know that Reagan made tax cuts and raised the budget for the military at all?

I do but the statement I was responding to was, "Ronnie Reagan [dismantled] the state mental hospital system back when he was Governor." Below is a quote from an opinion piece written five years ago by Joel John Roberts, the CEO of PATH Partners (People Assisting The Homeless). The title is, "Did Reagan’s Crazy Mental Health Policies Cause Today’s Homelessness?":

"I ask my mental health colleagues about this...What did he do? Let all of the mentally ill patients loose? Well, yes, that’s exactly what they say he did. Over 30 years ago, when Reagan was elected President in 1980, he discarded a law proposed by his predecessor that would have continued funding federal community mental health centers. This basically eliminated services for people struggling with mental illness.

He made similar decisions while he was the governor of California, releasing more than half of the state’s mental hospital patients and passing a law that abolished involuntary hospitalization of people struggling with mental illness. This started a national trend of de-institutionalization. Link

The problem the law caused (and still causes) for people like police, ER nurses and doctors and social workers is, they can only provide mental health services if the person asks for help. Roberts comments,
"But, wait. Isn’t one of the characteristics of severe mental illness not having an accurate sense of reality? Doesn’t that mean a person may not even realize he or she is mentally ill?"
Yes, that's the exact problem. The guy in the dirty clothes ranting and raving thinks he is fine. To blame Senator Diane Feinstein because there are homeless people in urban areas, and some of them are obviously mentally ill, doesn't seem fair at all. That was the sentiment I was responding to. In fact, I found the original criticism was so stream-of-consciousness that it was difficult to understand exactly what Feinstein was being blamed for, much less how to respond to it.

As for the rest, how Reagan managed to balance the federal budget when he was boosting military spending while cutting taxes, that's for another thread.
