Scenario 2: Your child takes your gun and shoots up a school and then kills himself and then you go to prison for 20 years.

The idea that scenario 1 is not a sufficient deterrent, but scenario 2 IS a sufficient deterrent is absurd to me.

What makes you think these people care about their kids? From my vantage point, all they care about is themselves or they'd have kept a closer eye on what they held precious.

I don't think we're going to be able to pin this one on "bullying".

Interresting, the news outfit I read did not go as far as that in the details, only mentionning family ties. I should probably try more news outfit but it is difficult to find the time and passion.

This has nothing to do with misogyny, and everything to do with a kid unable to deal with rejection of his crush and reacts in the worst possible way.

I have to agree that misogyny doesn't fit the available evidence.

First, we have no idea what this kid's attitude toward women in general actually was. Second, you don't kill yourself after killing the woman who rejected you if you're motivated by simple misogyny. That's the result of an intense hatred for your own, "new" life and the people you believe forced you into it, not a hatred for women (in this specific case, at least).

That's what we hear every time one of these gun lovers lets their kids get ahold of a gun and people get killed. But many times it's not their kid who gets killed. Maybe little Johnny picks up the Lugar paperweight on top of the TV set and shoots little Suzy next door. Then what? Has daddy suffered enough knowing his little one is now a killer? If your "common sense" made any sense, then the last 50,000 times someone took their parents gun and did something awful with it would have caused a change, and it hasn't.

I'll add this as well. Not every law is about deterrence. Sure, knowing that knocking over a bank can get you put away should be enough to keep people from doing it, but it doesn't work that way and we still put you away so that you can't do it again. These gun owners are a menace to normal people. They have a right to their guns and there's nothing I can do about that. But when they abuse that right and their guns fall into the hands of kids and bad things happen, that's on them and they should go away for a long while, lest they buy more guns and have more kids.

I can't find a link, but I'd heard somewhere that the shooter got shot in the neck when someone tried to take the gun away. If true, that means he didn't commit suicide.

I think I saw a raw video interview with one of his friends who witnessed Jaylen killing himself. I can't find it again though. This out of character rage reminds me of the violent steroid incidents. He was a football player, so I hope they investigate a possible steroid link.
