I know that US media is exported but have no idea of the actual extent of the spread of American media out side of the US. While I travel abroad oaccasionally, I've never watched American programming overseas other than the news, if I can find it.

American media really does dominate internationally. It's the source of many misconceptions about Americans and American life. Overseas, you can even by 'American Party' or 'Red Cup Party' kits. They are hilariously awesome. All this from the fact that Solo cups stand out like big red soar thumbs in American media, and what 'American Parties' are 'really like'. American men traveling overseas are sometimes assumed to be sex fiends and inherently violent. American women have to be careful in some places because people think they're easy to sleep with.

It's probably part of the reason why I always get mistaken for Canadian every time I travel abroad.

If I turn on the television to a random channel, chances are extremely good that I'm going to hear an American accent.

With American media and cultural stereotypes so ubiquitous, it's very hard not to.

I guess I've been enjoying the local flavor of my overseas travel more than I knew. The only times I saw any major news about the goings on in the USA while overseas was 1986 in Perth after the Challenger broke up and in Thailand 2001 during 9/11.

It's not news per se, and that's part of the problem. Subjects go though pop-culture osmosis, and the gun problems of the US are one of those things.

Media from the US, entertainment media, get very basic things wrong consistently. For example, there have been people in the UK who attempt to plead the 5th by invoking that phrase. Even in the US, one doesn't 'plead' the fifth. There have even been problems with people in other countries calling 911 in an emergency, even if their number is 000.

This also leads to many people around the world thinking the US is like California. That's because the entertainment industry is largely made there, and even if it's not accurate it's written as if California norms were applicable to the US in general.

And yes, that means when the US gets nervous about guns, many in the rest of the world know it. They don't have to watch US news to get it. It gets filtered through comedies, and movies, and references in songs.
