School shooting in Finland

That's very tragic :(

I'm not sure I agree it could have been stopped though - we don't have enough information to determine that at this stage. The boy might not have been identifiable in the video, for example. His face is mostly obscured and that might not be his regular hairstyle.

The name of the video was the school's name and today's date. They wouldn't need to know who it was.

Anyway, Norwegian internet papers have published several screen shots from his other videos, glorifying violence, guns, the Virginia Tech shooter, the Columbine shooters, etc etc.

In these videos, you can clearly see his face.

Yikes. What's the gun ownership law in Finland?

So the question is, why didn't anyone seeing these videos report him to police?

I thought the video was put up yesterday?

There are 8 dead, and the shooter is also not going to make it (he's still in hospital but has no chance of recovering).

Edit: You have to apply for a gun license from the police and I think you have to be a member of some hunting/shooting club (like the shooter was). Not 100% sure, though.

The video I linked to, yes. But not all his other videos, glorifying school massacres and him showing off his gun.

You guys in Finland must be taking this hard. It's one of the last countries I'd think anything like this would happen.

ETA:

His YouTube videos have been deleted, and his account suspended, but you can see title and description of all his videos here.

Yes, people are really shocked. I'm a teacher and I work in a school almost exactly like the one that was hit. Tomorrow we`ll have to discuss this with our students...

I don't know about stopping it easily, though. I mean there always seem to be loads of very, very clear signs people *should* have seen in these cases. What if the right people didn't happen to see them?

Btw, this was not the first shooting as was reported somewhere. In 1989 two pupils died.

Well, I didn't say easily. But all it would take is someone to see his videos and telling the right persons.

Or some of the people at 4chan.org contacting the Finnish authorities!

His manifesto can also be seen at his site, here. There's a version in English.

Seems he did it for a warped view of evolution.

Yes, I agree. I read somewhere that his friends had seen some gun stuff/weird drawings or something, but they thought he wasn't serious. He had never behaved threateningly before this.

It's starting to sound as if I thought nothing can be done about these insane shootings - I don't mean that. It's just so much easier afterwards. I bet those friends blame themselves for not doing anything/taking it seriously for the rest of their lives.

I just heard the news. Very, very surprising.

I guess there can be loose canons everywhere...although Finland is still the last place I would have expected something like this to happen.

Hmm. I think Finland has the highest homicide rate in Europe, or is at least in the sad top three (WHO in 2005). But stuff like this has happened only once before - usually it's someone getting insanely drunk and killing a spouse/ drinking buddy or something.

Edit: I tried to find numbers instead of trusting my memory: we're in top 5.

A quote from the shooter ,courtesy of CNN:
In the rambling text posted on the site, Auvinen said that he is "a cynical existentialist, anti-human humanist, anti-social social-Darwinist, realistic idealist and god-like atheist.

"I am prepared to fight and die for my cause," he wrote. "I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection."

What is scary is you see rants like this all the time on the internet.
Granted,90% of them are from 16 year old kids who think that Nihilism is "cool",but that so many think that is troubling.

We live in ugly times.

To be fair to that website, look at the time stamp. Assuming it's Eastern time, it seems to have been posted after the shooting took place, as a "joke."

As for the Youtube posts, they do seem very telling. Although, the internet today is a very cynical place and people might just have considered it a sick joke. People do post a lot of similar things without actually meaning it.

It's sad that the people around him did not pick up on it.

Also, who of us here would pick up a phone and call the police over something we read over the Internet, whether a suicide note or an intention to commit a crime, a cry for help against some outside danger or any other example you can think of?

Can you imagine calling 911 because dungeonsanddragons34567 from Kentucky posted a suicide note on imdb?

I used to feel like an idiot calling the police to report stalkers.

There is a poster at the 911Oz forums (forum for Australian truthers) who has posted repeated claims that he is going to stage massacres of Jews, ABC journalists (Australian version of the BBC not the American TV station), the Prime Minister, fellow truthers etc. He has a history of doing the same on Usenet etc.

He is banned by the moderators every time he creates a new user ID but I don't think anyone has contacted the authorities. It makes me wonder whether we should simply dismiss these people.
