School shooting: but don't mention guns!

You're grasping. I mean, REALLY grasping.

Not at all. Guns are a proven threat to society, they should be regulated just like these other threats.

Really? Good luck to you sir, as I'm afraid you're not capable of logical thought any more. In fact, I feel sorry for you.

So guns aren't a deterrence to robberies? I've heard otherwise from gun advocates.
Did I claim that?

but, to answer that, of course I would. However, legally, nope. Not even close.

Would you feel bad if someone stole your car and killed someone with it? Of course you would. However, legally, you're absolved of any wrongdoing.

My car wasn't designed to be a weapon. Guns are.

I agree. In fact, the dozen or so times he's brought it up, most Americans agreed with him. But, for some reason, not sure what it is, he keeps bringing it up. Hence, why he's on ignore.

The reason is because of the repeated claim that "most Americans agree". The thing is numerous Americans at the time did not agree, the jury for a start. Then add that and other instances of alleged DGUs to claims such as Kleck's 1.2 million DGUs a year, (a statistic I saw used yesterday in a US newspaper) and I do not see how Triforcharity can just dismiss that as an aberration which "most Americans agree" should not have happened.

I don't see what you are getting at there.

When you make an irrelevant comment, sometimes people will tell you it's irrelevant.

You could ask an English teacher there at your high school to explain it to you.

Ah, semantics (part 1). This article headlined anti and pro gun forces shows the commonly understood descriptives of both terms.

http://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/21/politics/gun-policy-two-different-worlds/index.html

"Both sides are so vested in intractable arguments that there is little room for political common ground. While both sides share a desire to keep children safe, it's like they are living in two different worlds.

On one side, the gun rights advocates argue that a well-armed populace can best defend the innocent. They say that if the teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School were armed -- or if there were armed security at the front door -- fewer lives would have been lost.

On the other side, the gun control advocates are fighting to protect lives by limiting access to guns. They say that if the weapons used in the Newtown massacre weren't so readily available -- there are at least 310 million non-military firearms in the U.S. today -- then the 27 people who were murdered might still be alive."

Just in case you have not figured it out, the anti in the headline are the gun rights advocates. The pro are the gun control advocates.

Yes, you'd like to use a definition which, because it isn't based on any objectivity, is for all practical purposes useless. That just shows that you aren't interested in effective, honest communication. But as far as expressing your self righteous indignation, you're doing a fine job. Keep it up.

Ah semantics (part 2). Give us your definition of anti-gun control and show how it is the real life definition.

Opposing gun control. It's the real life definition because when the component parts are assembled in that order (unless you separate it into "anti-gun" and "control"... but that would make it even more bizarre and less meaningful than the way you're trying to use it now), that's the only rational meaning. Rational. Your mileage may vary.

My arguments are neither dishonest nor the result of cultural artefacts. Any claim that honesty is down to culture is very dodgy ground and likely to be considered extremely offensive.

Wahh. The indignation and feigned persecution routine would fly farther in the religion forums.

Ah semantics (part 3). That depends on the definition of anti-gun control. You believe you hold the one true definition and I have got it horribly wrong. I have explained my use of the term and it fits what i have claimed.

Yes, you've redefined a term to suit your agenda. But of course that isn't an honest way to engage in a dialog.

I disagree

Of course you do.

Ah semantics (part 4). So does that mean your definition of anti-gun control is anti all forms of gun control, every single one of them? Also, by gun control do you mean support for all forms of gun control, every single one of them? Does that mean these guys, described as anti-gun control

http://newyork.newsday.com/news/nat...ol-activists-launch-online-petition-1.4371430

who want to deport Piers Morgan also want all gun control laws ended, every single one of them?

Just because many people who write magazine articles are crappy communicators is no reason for you to emulate them.

I say the answer is no, term anti-gun control applies to the likes of the NRA and the majority of gun owners who want a minimal amount of gun control and favour gun rights over gun controls. But that does not mean they want no gun controls whatsoever.

So everyone is pro-gun control because even the people who are anti-gun control support gun control.

Ah semantics (part 5). I would accept that everyone who owns a gun supports some forms of gun control at a level of overall gun control that is less than those who do not own a gun.

And since you clearly have no idea what "less than" means in that context, should anyone care what you have to say about it? It's just your unsupported subjective opinion based on what appears to be a severe misunderstanding of the issue, an irrational fear, a bizarrely obsessive concern about how people in other countries live their lives, and the resultant sense of self righteousness. You're welcome to it, of course. But it has no place in a discussion among grown-ups.

Ah semantics (part 6) By your definition of anti-gun control, not mine.

Yes, of course. You'd define anti-gun control as favoring some unspecified type, style, and/or amount of gun control.

I see a whole different topic in effectiveness and enforcement.

Effectiveness and enforcement are integral to the issue of gun control and not a whole different topic. It's clear you aren't willing to discuss the issue rationally and honestly. Remember, you believe anti-gun control means being against some gun control but for some gun control. Your opinion on effectiveness and enforcement and how they relate to the topic of gun control is based on something other than objective reality.

I am well aware of the overlaps between the two, the agreements (such as over mental health and waiting 5 days) and the disagreements (such as over banning handguns). You are very mistaken if you think I see this as you describe.

Given that nothing in your arguments has anything to do with objective reality, and much of it is built on some verbiage you seem to be inventing as you go along, you are very mistaken if you think you see this as you describe. :p

Your ability to explain is limited due to your style of argumentum ad nauseam, being offensive and semantics.

Ah yes, semantics. Hate to have objective meanings for the words we use in a conversation, eh? That semantics stuff reduces the likelihood that you'll get away with dishonesty and logical fallacies. I can see why you wouldn't want to involve semantics. Do note that your disdain for semantics is causing you to fail at communicating effectively.

.......

So everyone is pro-gun control because even the people who are anti-gun control support gun control.

........

So all of your drivel, attacks boils down to semantics. You are the dishonest one as the terms anti and pro gun control, or rights and control are widely understood to define the two sides and people understand within the two sides there is an overlap and different extremes from no controls to no guns.

- Issue ridiculous jail time for even possessing an unregistered firearm.
Unregistered? Can you define that for me? I just want to make sure we're on the same page.

Sure...what I meant say was simply illegal guns. This can be for a few reasons:

- Possessing a long gun or handgun that is not registered to you (or not registered at all). (In NY, the serial# of long guns is placed in your name at the time of sale when the FBI check is done even though a permit isn't required.)

- Possessing a handgun when you do not have a proper permit (of course, not all states require permits, but being in NY, that's what I'm familiar with).

- Possessing a gun when you are forbidden to do so. (ie: you have a criminal record and are not allowed to own/carry a gun of any kind.)

- Possessing a gun that has been reported as stolen/missing.

I'm sure there are more reasons why a gun is deemed "illegal".

Fines should be imposed, hefty ones, for loss of firearm. Insurance could be the way to mitigate the fine, however.. if the gun is then used to murder someone, the owner should be charged with manslaughter. Small price to pay for "self defense", IMO.

Huh?

Just to be clear...you want to fine and/or imprison someone for someone else's actions?

I will agree that gun owners should be diligent and responsible for their firearms, but unless it can be shown there was serious negligence on the owner (like leaving the gun laying on the dashboard of the car while going into a store), how can you justify punishing them for another's actions?

Why stop there? Tell you what, if I steal a hammer out of your trunk/boot and use it to smash some ladies head in, I'll be sure to name you as an accomplice.

I can't speak for TBK, but to my mind you should (I don't know whether this is already the case) have to report any gun being stolen. When you do so, the police should investigate to ensure it was properly secure. If this is not the case, every time a gun is used in a crime, the owner can simply say it was stolen months ago.

I absolutely agree. A lost/stolen firearm of any type should be reported to police immediately. Heck, if that happened to me, I'd make sure I have a copy of that police report in triplicate in my safe just so I could protect myself if that firearm is ever used in a crime.

I can't imagine anyone would have an issue with such a law. When it comes to gun ownership, I take it extremely seriously. There should be absolutely NO tolerance for guns to go "missing" and there is zero room for ignorance.

Accomplice? How about fully culpable? You couldn't have used that hammer if it wasn't in his trunk.

Not at all. Guns are a proven threat to society, they should be regulated just like these other threats.

And they are regulated. Just like other threats. Problem is that, sometimes, bad people do bad things.

Aircraft...dangerous and regulated...yet a group of lunatics killed a massive amount of people with them back in 2001.

Anthrax...dangerous and regulated...yet some lunatic killed people with it back in 2001.

Ammonium Nitrate...dangerous and regulated...yet some lunatic killed a massive amount of people with it back in 1995.

Shall I continue?

Sure, you can continue with your two wrongs make a right and perfect solution fallacies until you tire. Thinking people will just ignore them.

I'm not asking for people to ignore anything. Problem is that we have folks here who can't disconnect themselves from fantasy and reality because of personal ignorance.

Ok, we're on the same page. basically like the title of a car.

I'm not opposed to that at all. However, to charge the original owner with the thief's crimes, is wrong.

I think most states have requirements that say that you must, upon discovering that a gun's been stolen, it must be reported as such.

He didn't claim that. Is reading for comprehension a difficult concept for you sir? It seems to be.

Calling people who disagree with you ignorant hardly adds to debate. It's just a shabby ad hom.
