What's with the "news" on CNN or BBC or what FAKE NEWS outlet it was that the Saudis were about to "confess" that it was an interrogation gone wrong? Must have been two or more days since those anonymous officials made the prediction. Has it happened yet (serious question)?

I don't know, but it sounded like they were floating that explanation to see how it played. Maybe the feedback was not so positive.

Doing themselves a favour by not saying anything until after the investigations. At which point they will have stable ground around which they can attempt to create a pallatble narrative of events.

I found CNN, running the story "Saudis preparing to admit Jamal Khashoggi died during interrogation, sources say" on October 15. Trump made his "rogue agents" remark on the same day. The bit of effort I was willing to spend didn't deliver a definitive answer to who was first. But if I were a betting person I would bet on Trump saying his thing after being asked by "journalists" about the CNN report.

The Saudi Attorney General said on Friday night that the investigation showed the death of Saudi citizen Jamal Khashoggi during a fight in the consulate.

The Attorney General said in a statement that preliminary investigations on the case of Jamal Khashoggi showed his death, and that investigations continue with the detainees in custody of the case and the number so far is 18 people, all of Saudi nationality.

The statement also said that royal court adviser al-Qahtani and deputy intelligence chief Ahmed Asiri have been sacked from their positions.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz also ordered the formation of a ministerial committee with Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, as head to restructure the general intelligence agency.
