Celebrated champion of women's 'rights' and all around 'funnywoman' Sarah Silverman was caught in a fib anecdote that was meant to highlight the fact that women are paid less than men for the same work.

from the daily mail:
'Comedian Sarah Silverman was forced to apologize after she was caught exaggerating a story about being paid less than a man for a gig - to highlight the gender pay gap.
The comic and feminist campaigner recalled an incident at the New York Comedy Club when she claimed she was paid less than her male counterpart, for a piece she recorded a wage-discrimination-activism video for Levo League.
But Silverman has been forced to apologize after New York Comedy Club owner Al Martin revealed the story was false, because Silverman had been paid less purely because she appeared as a guest on the show and wasn't meant to receive anything - her male counterpart Todd Barry was booked for the slot.'

I read her apology, and the only thing she really regrets is being so specific and mentioning her friend Al Martin instead of vaguely lying to stir up feminist outrage.

My favorite part was after her halfhearted apology when she said:'To the maniacs who want to use this as a chit against women’s issues, I ask that you please don’t. Because that would be super ******,'

Wouldn't it be, Sarah. As ****** as throwing your friend under the bus in a lie just to falsify evidence that your already dubious pet issue, the wage gap, is a real thing?

The best argument I have seen defending her is that she didn't "lie" because she isn't saying that the situation didn't happen. Apparently some people don't believe lying by omission is lying. I love how she laments that she shouldn't have used real peoples names so that no one would be able to tell. OOPS!

The "wage gap" claims have to be one of the biggest most dishonest widely repeated meme's around. It's very simple, women can earn an average 30% less than men while this still not being caused by men being paid more for the same job. We know that single childless women under 30 earn more than men, sometimes even 20% more! And we know that there are various careers where women earn more than men do for the same job, even in male dominated areas, even in US federal jobs. Does this mean men are being discriminated against?

The campaign for "wage equality" is demanding companies pay men and women the same still claim that women are paid around 79c for every dollar a man makes. The gap is not in how much women are being paid, it is in how much they are earning on average. Whenever this is pointed out you will see the typical argument that women are being socialized to not strive for the top paying jobs or to be as career-orientated, but while there are very good arguments in response to this, that would still not be the same claim about how women are literally being short changed in the work place requiring government intervention to force them to pay women the same as men.

Women have rights - and, in the US that is supposed to be the same rights as not women (if you get my drift and I hope you do). Comic makes purposeful error and lies. Hey bring on Dennis Miller cranks.........:D:D:D:D:D

Leaving aside the details of this case, why do you put the inverted commas round 'rights'? Do women not have rights?

They have every right men do. depending on how the word rights is interpreted, they have more if you count the right to an abortion, which is a good thing in my opinion, and the right to abandon an infant at a fire department's doorstep if ever she cannot take care of said infant.

They also have the right to be paid the same as men for the same work, which is protected by 50+ year old laws like the Equal Pay Act, which is why i think it might be time to stop making noise about trumped up statistics.

Yawn. Our daily dose of vitriolic misogyny. More to come I'm sure.

According to some, no, women in Western countries do not have rights, or are lacking rights and privileges allegedly accorded to men, and women are the subject of constant and numerous forms of oppression that are not being addressed.

I invite you to make a thread cataloging all the rights and privileges afforded to men that women are lacking. On this particular thread we are discussing the Wage Gap, so if you would care to weigh in on that topic with some compelling evidence that this is going on and people aren't being punished, then please do.

It's a funny day and age when rationally asserting that we already are given equal rights is considered "vitriolic misogyny"

Am I hurting anyone's feelings by struggling with all my might to find the patriarchy at work and failing to?

It is not my position nor my claim. It is a claim, however, often made by those who also assert there is a real and pervasive 'wage gap'.

The so-called 'wage gap' is a part of the larger issue to which I alluded in my prior post. If you wish to only discuss that specific strand, that's fine, but it is part of a larger tapestry.

It is my guess Walter Ego was being sarcastic in his comment, but he'll have to confirm that.

Just to get it straight then, for those of us trying to keep up: There's no wage gap?

Is there still a thigh gap?

Probably very little, if any, and possibly in the other direction, on average. The trick is in finding true comparisons - same hours worked, same performance, etc. It's kind of like the stats that show women drivers have less traffic accidents than men. They do, per year, but they have more per mile (men still have more fatal accidents per mile).

Yea, I've seen examples of jobs where women are paid more than men (posted links earlier), but haven't actually seen any examples where men were paid more than women. It's always this vague reference to how they really do exist and how they know someone who was, or something. Well, that is assuming they don't just tell you that obviously women are paid less for the same work because "77c for every dollar", and then you need to take a long time explaining how that is an average which is typically quite difficult to get them to accept because they usually can't believe they were lied to quite so shamelessly.

Penn said in his last podcast (Penn's Sunday School) that Joe Franklin was going to sue him for defamation of character for what she said in the movie the Aristocrats but settled out of court for $500. Penn stated that Sarah Silverman responded by saying she was going to press charges against him. (I am not sure how much of that is real or just for jokey joke purposes)

I'd like to know how some of this is calculated. Take my industry for example. I'm a process tech for a large municiple water utility. There are more men in our field, at least in the wastewater side, but there are probably 7 or 8 women. We get offered a bit of overtime. There are two groups of people that don't take over time at all. The ex military guys who have pensions aside from their job and the women. All the "overtime pigs" are men.... Including me. I'll take any shift, cancel any function to get overtime. The women just seem to value the time off more then guys. Even the OT they do take is usually done just to get more days off (1 OT shift equals 2 days off). Now i wonder if that is tabulated women being paid less then men? Because it's true.... And I'm sure my experience is not an isolated one.

Now I should add I've experienced one case in my working career where a female minority wasn't paid close to what I made, dispite being there longer and being better at the job. She was Philipeno and extremely nice... I think that allowed her to be taken advantage of.
