That's the thing. The name may have been "bad", but that's a subjective opinion and in any case hardly constitutes a remarkable "gaffe", nor is the name itself funny (even to a twelve-year-old). Those calling it a mistake seem to be suggesting that whenever composing a name for something, one has to make sure it won't set off a wave of toilet humor should someone arbitrarily decide to make an acronym out of it. I'm not sure that's as intuitive as people seem to think it is.

Of course now that it's a problem I suppose he should do something about it, either by changing it and firing the person who thought if the name, or by exploiting his opponents' reaction.

He's running a campaign for President of the United States, not the local school board. Everything that he and his campaign staff does will be scrutinized to the nth degree, that's just the way it is. In this day and age, we make acronyms out of everything, IMHO. For someone not to notice the acronym or if they did notice it, to not understand its meaning and possible negative connotation is just inexcusable cluelessness.

I never cared for Beavis and Butthead for reasons similar to why you don't find this incident funny. Difference is I don't have to judge the show beyond the fact that I don't find it funny.

Are you sure? Yeah, we've had some fun with it here but I've yet to see any mention of it in the general media. We know that Santorum is aware of the new definition of his name because he's mentioned in person. Thus his staff knows. Thus, as Spindrift notes, since this is a campaign under an intense media microscope, this is a fireable offense by whoever was involved. And Santorum's best strategy is to just ignore it because I cannot see any productive avenues to exploit it.
