Rush Limbaugh says we need to return to ‘segregated buses'

So, why is Limbaugh, Beck and even O’Riely are gaining in popularity and few liberal pundits (like Larry King) can make it in the free market of communications?

I don't know exactly.
Why are McDonald's Burger King and Wendy's successful around the world, but no chain specializing in healthy food can even dream of competing on that scale.

Maybe because quality is not the same thing as popularity or financial success.

I'm not sure about the TV, but liberal talk radio is just not entertaining, even for liberals. They've tried several times with massive financial backing, setting up entire networks and scouring the country for talent. I was hoping they would make it, I like listening to things like this while I am working.

ETA: The shows they have had on have showed to much vitriol and not enough comedy.

The only way to combat someone who is mostly right is find a tidbit where he sounds wrong. It also helps to lift something out of context. I do not see where he says we really need segregated buses.
I don't often agree with you, Bill, but this time you're absolutely right. I'm sick and tired of people (of both sides of the political spectrum) quote-mining peoples' passages for offensive words or statements, for then to attack the person making the argument by branding him racist or whatever.

Did you see the part where they gave you the transcript and audio, so you could understand the context?

No, of course you didn't, because you're saying he was quoted "out of context" as a reflexive rhetorical tool you've heard politicians and public figures use before to deflect heat for saying stupid, inflammatory, racist things, like children should be segregated on schoolbus by race.

You want a "liberal" who wins head-to-head against Limbaugh?

That is -- Who makes more ad revenue running in an overlapping time slot?

Of course there is one.

Oprah.

NPR's Morning Edition has roughly the same audience size as Rush Limbaugh's show.

Liberals seek information, conservatives seek someone else to form their opinion.

Not in the same time slot, so they are not really competitors.

Roughly the same people might be listening to both every day.

Besides, Oprah isn't just liberal politically, she's also spiritual. Or so it is said.

You never hear anyone say that about Limbaugh. :D

NPR Free market?

And generalizations like this is why I cannot take you seriously.

I believe there could be some sarcasm/irony in his words and that he doesn't literally mean that he believes in segregated buses. I would only ask that he extend the same courtesy to others that he asks for himself--to be less deceptive on the context of things he reports others saying.

This is why I can't listen to him for very long, though I sometimes try to in the name of fairness. I can actually feel myself getting dumber while I listen, just from the amount of half-truths presented.

I, for one, am not interested in anything Rush Hussein Limbaugh has to say until I've seen a birth certificate.

Actually, I would be willing to bet Rush isn't all that racist. I think he just is taking his dim-witted, racist audience for all he can get. If there were more money in socialist radio, he'd be preaching the virtues of "Brother Fidel". Believing him is about like thinking Little Timmy really was clumsy enough to fall down all those wells.

Because their target audience doesn't attract the advertising dollars that conservatives do ?

Advertisers tend to pay more when people actually buy their stuff ...

Please clarify whatever point you were trying to make because that didn't make much sense.

Most conservatives and most liberals (most people for that respect) are no different in that they seek information, and that they make up their own opinions. Political pundits tend to validate peoples beliefs.

Hope this helps.

I agree. In the sense he's not a cross-burner. He wouldnt call someone an "n-word lover".

He wouldn't put a noose up on his front lawn.

But he's definitely VERY concerned about what he perceives as "reverse racism", and he has the right-wing victim mentality oozing out of his pores. And when this leads to a lot of concerns about white victimization (as the schoolbus thing handily evidences) it can lead one to a place that is racism on a lower scale.

Peel back his rants on welfare queens and immigrants and what you see is a guy railing against what he sees as the unfair elevation of blacks and hispanics at the cost of white men.

Which I think qualifies as a kind of racism, if one not so obvious (even to him).

Because the people running left wing radio tend to be Activists who have little or no radio experience, and don't get A: that you have to entertain to get a audience and B.They tended to hire people based more on their Progressive Credentials then their skills as a radio host and it showed.. Air America is a good example where they hired people when they started like Jeanine Garofalao who had NO radio experience whatsoever, and it showed. Some, like Al Franken did eventually develope skill, but others did not. Air America, after the debacle of the first few years, begun hiring more radio professiionals, but they never have recovered from the fiasco of the first few years.
Yes, the people running Right Wing Radio are ideologues, but they came from a background in radio and knew what would work and what would not.
