Rudd resigns as foreign minister

Well, well, well, aren't the Opposition looking particularly stupid now. After spend a good part of the week blasting Gillard for being rolled by the "faceless men" and not getting her preferred choice, Bob Carr, into Senate and as Foreign Minister, guess who gets the gig?

Yup, Bob Carr. If Abbott and Pyne had any dignity, they would apologize. Not going to happen. Worst Opposition ever.

Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise for everyone, I think.

It was? Even silly old Pharaoh saw it coming last Tuesday.

As it happens, NSW Labor is trying to get Bob Carr to take the job but he says he doesn't want it. I think he might just be holding out to see if he can score the Foreign Affairs portfolio.

What I find interesting about the Carr appointment, is that earlier in the week when it was claimed by the noalition that Gillards chosen one, Carr, was hit on the head by the faceless men. This morning, Pyne was on the radio saying that the faceless men put Carr in. They are pathetic (the noalition), whatever Labor does they spin a negative tale.

Why Mr Rabbit lets Pyne open his mouth about anything... ever, is beyond me.

Well yeah. That's why they're called the opposition. They oppose. That's their job.

One of the best opposition leaders was Kim Beazley. When Howard said black, Beazley stood up and said white. When Howard said up, Beasley said down. I think if Howard had said that water is wet, Beazley would have found some way of claiming that it was dry.

Water can be dry. Wine is mostly water. One type of wine is a dry wine. For my next trick I will prove that black is white.

I have never had any time for Rudd, and didn't even vote Labor in 2007. That you don't get things is not terribly surprising.

Unfortunately for Labor, he was the only one in the parliamentary party capable of doing the job of Foreign Minister.

If you want, but the fact that he caused so much **** with his first challenge kind of demonstrates his incompetence.

The Labor party's problems are of it's own making, and Gillard has tried to deal with them the best she can in a very delicate situation.

* The HSU. This union has been at war with itself for many years, and the corruption was a major part of that. The Labor Party as a whole did not deal with it then, and is reaping the results of that inaction now. Not Gillards doing, but there is a potential for a loss of a seat there if it can't be dragged out for the next year and a half. Problem, need an extra vote in parliament now, because you don't know how this will pan out.
* Pokies. The NSW branch in particular seems to be unable to do anything what what the pokie industry orders it to. Wilkie walks, technically, Labor can't survive a no confidence notion, although Wilkie would be mad to vote for one, he has shown before he will walk if he wants to (when he quit his job because the Iraq invasion). Once again, next an vote.
*Slipper. Need an extra vote, preferably two. He will have to do, not because Gillard wants him, but because the Labor party itself has forced this choice on her.

So, now that this is a mess, why blame Gillard. The party itself is leaking again to the press. They can find someone to blame, but cannot take responsibility for their own actions, which have been in large part to blame.

Abbot is not superman, if they man up to him, they stand a better chance than if they do what he tells them to do, which would be the ultimate humiliation, because they will lose either way.

I say just go for it, and bring in gay marriage as well.

At work we have been working on a (for us) massive campaign to try and get the government to honour the bilateral agreement to increase aid spending in next week's Budget. It has been tremendously successful, with people like Geoffrey Rush, Hugh Jackman, Missy Higgins, Jimmy Barnes, The Wiggles, bank CEOs and church and charity leaders have signed on to our open letter.

The thing I won't say in the office is - it won't work. Apart from anything else, we probably won't even have a government by then.

Gillard has done an outstanding job keeping the government in power after Rudd's ego trip. I still think its an even money bet that this government will go full term. If both Thompson and Slipper are charged, it probably won't, if they aren't, it will.

It still means a coalition government next term. I'm not sure Abbott will be PM. People forget that the Nationals will have a say. I'm not sure they love Abbott.

There will be a government by then. Despite the sound and fury in the press, the govt is in government, and they want to stay there. Their policies beat the Abbott policies by a mile. Not hard to do when you consider all he wants to do is undo everything they have done. The NBN is a good example. Despite the demands to pull it apart, everyone wants to know when it will implemented where they live.
