My thoughts are with you both - hope Robert has a speedy recovery!
A friend of mine had a HUGE stroke 4 months ago, and was given a very small chance of survival, let alone a full recovery. He had both an embolism and a blockage, which made things pretty complicated (stop bleeding or remove blockage. Hm.)
From your report above, it seems on the face of it that Robert is not as affected as my friend was - he did not respond for a few days - in fact he was comatose for the initial period. (The doc treating him said that he had lost function in 2/3 of his brain, but I'm a little skeptical of that.)
Anyway, 4 months down the line he has recovered phenomenally. He is working on his farm again, milking cows and making cheeses, etc. etc. He has lost some things, like the whole of 2007, for example, but he is starting to get flashes of memory from that year again.
He has also apparently lost all social filters, but we all suspect that he is using his stroke as an excuse to be his usual obnoxious self

He also has a problem remembering movies and music, for some reason. Again, this loss seems to be correcting itself slowly.
What I'm clumsily trying to do here is point out to you that although strokes are nasty things, and yes, mileage may vary, it is very likely that given Robert's current condition and the responses you've told us about, he will pull through this. I'm holding out hope and thinking positive! I believe Robert is probably pig-headed enough to not give in

.
(Just an aside to all of you out there - if you do feel a twinge of unexplainable pain in your left arm, get it checked out! My friend had seven of these twinges before the major stroke hit - each little twinge was in fact a mini-stroke. He was just too mistrusting of doctors to go for a checkup).
Hang in there!
