RSL in hospital

Robert is one of my biggest heroes and I look up to him an extraordinary amount. Please let him know he's in my thoughts (as are you!). Please outline your needs as soon as you're aware of them so we can all help. Big hugs to both of you.

SSB was one of the first skeptic sites I ever found. The work and research there put me onto a new community where being doubtful was ok.

My best wishes for you both and hopes for a speedy recovery.

Crimeny!! I just spotted the news over at BadPsychics. Would that I knew some deities to appeal to on your behalf. You will be in my thoughts, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

You are in my thoughts! Please let us know if there is anything at all that we can do!

Just found out.

I'm shocked! My stomach just dropped when I was told about Robert. I am so sad.

Susan - take good care of yourself, try to get lots of sleep, make sure you eat. You are Robert's inspiration and he needs you. The next few days are going to be exhausting, really try to rest.

If he never writes another word, he has already done thousands of more work to help bring reason to the world than most everyone I know.

Gosh I am soo sad right now.

One of my main goals for TAM6 was to shake Robert's hand, he was a busy guy and everyone wanted a piece of him. But I managed to have Paulina take [link should go here]

Susan, I just don't know what to say, so I better shut up now.

The other Susan

I just herd the news today. The other Susan told me today at work. I was sadden by the news. I wrote to him a few weeks after we got back from TAM 6 and he was always really nice. Well i hope everything goes well. Take Care.

Crap. I just saw the news.

My sincere wishes for a full & speedy recovery.

Robert is the reason I found this forum in the first place. I admire his work immensely. I looked forward to and anticipate his return.

Sad news indeed, my best wishes to you both and I hope Robert makes a speedy recovery.
Robert is I feel one of the icons of the skeptic movement and has educated so many people as to the fraudulent nature of these charlatans.

thinking of you both

late, but heartfelt

I had not read this appalling piece of news until now (other side of the pond and no internet yesterday). Nothing much I can say that has not already been mentioned by others here.

One question, though (because I never know how to handle this kind of thing): has RSL's granddaughter been told? How do you tell small kids about these things, if you do? I can guess that this would be a concern of Robert's too, that's one reason I am daring to ask.

My very best wishes to both of you from the other side of the Atlantic.

I was away on business when this all came out, and only got a chance to post late last night in the Community thread when I was barely awake. I had the privilege of spending time with Robert and Susan at TAM 5.5, and they are two of the nicest folks I've ever met.

Robert, you hang in there, and I'll be rooting for ya - and you, too Susan. In the meantime, I'll keep expecting to hear good news from you guys, and if t here's anything I can do on a personal basis, just PM me and it's yours.

*hugs*

Robert,

I wish you a speedy recovery. We need you back in the trenches soon!

You've been an inspiration to everyone here. Thank you.

All I can offer is support, though I'd gladly offer more if I could. I've been a quiet fan of your site for a while.

All the best to you and your family.

These past few days seem like some of the longest ever, as we wait and hope for the best. Susan, hang in there and know how much we are all rooting for you both. We will be happy to post the updates from here to the other forum for you, no worries.

My thoughts are with you both - hope Robert has a speedy recovery!

A friend of mine had a HUGE stroke 4 months ago, and was given a very small chance of survival, let alone a full recovery. He had both an embolism and a blockage, which made things pretty complicated (stop bleeding or remove blockage. Hm.)

From your report above, it seems on the face of it that Robert is not as affected as my friend was - he did not respond for a few days - in fact he was comatose for the initial period. (The doc treating him said that he had lost function in 2/3 of his brain, but I'm a little skeptical of that.)

Anyway, 4 months down the line he has recovered phenomenally. He is working on his farm again, milking cows and making cheeses, etc. etc. He has lost some things, like the whole of 2007, for example, but he is starting to get flashes of memory from that year again.

He has also apparently lost all social filters, but we all suspect that he is using his stroke as an excuse to be his usual obnoxious self :p He also has a problem remembering movies and music, for some reason. Again, this loss seems to be correcting itself slowly.

What I'm clumsily trying to do here is point out to you that although strokes are nasty things, and yes, mileage may vary, it is very likely that given Robert's current condition and the responses you've told us about, he will pull through this. I'm holding out hope and thinking positive! I believe Robert is probably pig-headed enough to not give in :).

(Just an aside to all of you out there - if you do feel a twinge of unexplainable pain in your left arm, get it checked out! My friend had seven of these twinges before the major stroke hit - each little twinge was in fact a mini-stroke. He was just too mistrusting of doctors to go for a checkup).

Hang in there!

We're all eager to hear him tell us of how he died, saw a light, then met Kaz and Jesus.

Yeah, that will happen. :D

Thanks, Susan, for the news. He knows that you're there for him even if right now his brain functions are severely impaired.

The same goes for experiencing any weird/wavy vision that lasts for 30 minutes or so. Especially after the second time it happens...
