I can't stop police from capriciously arresting people who engage in behavior that doesn't harm anybody.

ETA: it is the act of arrest that is harmful in that situation....not the question.

For the attorney to have accepted the offer would have not be illegal per se, but would have been considered unethical by the Alabama Bar (it's a no no to accept money to drop a client to begin with, and to wprk against the client's interest after dropping them for money is even worse) and would have put the attorney in grave danger of being disbarred.
