Rosie O'Donnell is an idiot

I mentioned this thread to my wife. She said that the next day that Barbara Walters announced that O'Donnell had gotten Aikens and Ripa together and had apologized to both of them.

I don't know if this changes anybodies mind, but I thought it was relevant to the issue. My wife's view was that O'Donnell made a mistake, she acknowledged it, tried to rectify it and moved on. No big deal. Seems about right to me, also.
I was about to tut-tut Rosie for not explaining her mistake in public, since that's where she made it. But then I realized that she's already made enough public hay about Clay's sexual orientation, and he's better served by her private apology.

My question which doesn't seem to have come up yet, is how can a women be homophobic toward a gay (or allegedly gay) man? That makes no sense.

  1. Gay cooties may turn her lesbian
  2. Competition
  3. "Its a sin against God!"
  4. They may critique her fashion sense
  5. She may actually have a fear of lisps
  6. Her father was killed by a homosexual street gang
  7. To Wang Foo Thanks For Everything: She saw Patrick Swayze in drag.

She is a phobichomo. She thinks every action or comment toward anyone gay is automatically based on her sexuality.

Rosie O'Donnel taken down by the intellectual giant Kelly Ripa?

Incredible!

As for Garafalo, you won't catch me watching anything she appears in. Period. Precisely because of her politics.

You missed a golden opportunity to tell him "That's sound thinking!" and offer to get him some mouthwash.

Nice one!

People are going to wonder why I spend the next 10 years hanging around washrooms....

That would be a fair assessment of Rosie's attitude sure, but I'm taking about from Ripa's point of view. Even if Ripa had actually said something explicitly derogatory toward Aiken, that could be described as bigoted, anti-gay, discriminatory, etc. but "homophobic" is just not applicable in that situation, proving, of course that the thread title is correct--Rosie is, in fact, an idiot.

Homophobia is the simple hatred (or fear) of the gay. It doesn't have to be same-sex directed, as in a "gay panic defense". A straight woman can be homophobic about a gay man; she merely won't entertain a sexual element to it the way a homophobic man may.

I am showing my age here, but I am guessing you've never heard of Anita Bryant. :)

Plenty of people are homophobic because they think God told them to be. (Insert appropriate quotes from the Bible.) This applies to women as much as men.

Cheers,
Ben

Actually, I am going to spend the next ten years studiously trying *not* to think about that.

Just as hard as I can.
