A few years ago, if I remember correctly, there was a book from a good university press that claimed that Nazi Germany did indeed have eventual designs on the US and moving into the western hemisphere. But they were long term plans and involved building aircraft carriers and long range bombers.

"Long term" is in "decades, at best". Even if everything had gone according to their plans, I expect it would have taken the Nazis a generation or two to digest Europe.

I saw something like this too in material produced just after the war. It was based on the Germans using French, Dutch, Danish and Spanish (Spain having absorbed Portugal) colonies and land claims in the Americas and Africa to make inroads and set up bases

There's also the small point that Germany declared war on the USA first, and if it hadn't it's unlikely the US Congress would have approved a declaration of war against Germany. Of course this implies Hitler was working with Roosevelt...
