Romney would increase military spending by $2.1 trillion

What exactly are we going to spend all that money on? Are we so worried about that one Chinese aircraft carrier that we think the twelve we have on hand are not enough and we totally need a flying one like in The Avengers?

I am quite sure we could have that carrier on the bottom any time we wanted, with no trace of what happened to it.

Will any I see any of this 2.1 trillion in my paycheck (Besides what I already get)?

If Obama tries to cut military spending the GOP accuse him of being a "radical" and "gutting the military".

Radical Obama Making Good on Vow to Gut the U.S. Military; Reportedly Planning to Cut Approx. 1 out of every 7 Active Duty U.S. Soldiers

Oh FFS man! Spoiler alert next time! Not all of us have seen the movie. Jeez...

:boxedin:

Maybe an additional question to ask is if it is morally responsible. When Iran drops its Fat Man on Israel and blows it to smithereens, it would be nice to know the USA is fully prepared with a well-equipped and fully funded military, no matter what the cost.

I'm pretty sure the US could handle Iran's military.

I just hope Obama has an exit plan/strategy in mind! ;)

Seeing as how 6 of the top 7 (including the USA) are allies of the USA what the heck is all the fear for? If China attacks any one of the Allies they will have a **** storm of war brought upon them.

We could all cut our spending in half and still be ready for Armageddon. Meanwhile half this country thinks healthcare is the enemy.

Oh tell me about it. And the rhetoric flies so fast and furious if anyone dare recommend cutting spending.

The problem with having this super-duper military is that we want to use it. Why buy all those great toys if you aren't going to use them?

It was an esteemed Repulican who warned us...

...against the Military Industrial Complex.

We are doing it wrong.

Post 27 shows that China spends 1/6 of what we do for the military. Given their pay scales and industrial costs, they probably have twice as much stuff and 14 times as many guys as we do.

There will be a quite enthusiastic civil war there some day. But men don't matter much in the strategic picture because they do not have transports sufficient to invade. But they sure as hell are a deterrent to invasion by anybody. And they could overrun any of their neighbors at will.

The link I posted actually makes that very case. However it points out that even granting that fact we and out allies still dwarf anyone else.

Mutually Assured Destruction. They have nukes. We have nukes.

The balance of conventional forces seems irrelevant.

I assure you, it is not. If China decides to invade Taiwan, we are not going to use nuclear weapons in response.

Romney is calling for "4% for freedom" but the table provided by Randfan shows that the US already spends 4.7% of GDP on the military.

I guess it's how you categorise the spending.

Yes. The 4.7% figure includes the cost of ongoing wars like that in Afghanistan.

The base budget is currently 3.5% of GDP, and Romney is proposing to raise that to 4%.

Total military spending will depend on whether Romney gets us involved in any new wars and the pace of winding down the ones we are already in. Regarding this variable, Romney has stated that "Iran will not acquire a nuclear weapon on my watch", indicating that he is prepared to go to war with Iran to prevent that.
