Nothing to do with cosplay, posing or window-dressing. It's to do with values. For example, if someone is vegetarian, it would be against their values to eat meat. That's not the same as being trendy.

No, it was the type of situation where one member was completely letting his fellow band members down by showing up to performances tripping balls to the extent that he often just stood there doing nothing, or strumming a single chord all night, or wandering around the stage not playing at all, or detuning his guitar and just playing noise. That's why they stopped picking him up for shows, not because of any fanciful conspiracy theory in which they were going to dump him so they could "go commercial" by writing "pop albums" like Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma. Wright was sharing a flat with Barrett at that time, and said he would leave for hours, or even a couple of days, and Barrett would have no idea he'd even gone out. So it's not like he was standing on the front stoop, guitar case in hand, and alternately looking at his watch and down the street.

This reminds me of many Nirvana fans in the early '90s romanticizing Kurt Cobain's suicide by claiming it was because he was too pure an artist to let his music be commercialized, rather than because he was in the grips of a massive heroin addiction.

Gilmour was brought into the band because Barrett had become so unreliable as to be virtually useless. He may have been tripping too hard to know what was going on or where he was, but the rest of them surely felt the humiliation of going in stage and knowing that they'd just performed a crap show no matter how hard they worked to compensate for Barrett's lack of professionalism.

And again, it's hilarious that you imply that Pink Floyd suddenly started making commercial pop albums so that they could 'cash in'. Barrett had little input into A Saucerful of Secrets, yet it is clearly by the same band as The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. There is a clear evolutionary connection between the compositions, as there is to More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds... None of those albums can in any way be characterized as "commercial pop".

That is my opinion after looking at the aforeposted videos, including the collection of interviews of Waters recorded over the years. Waters doesn't even hide the duper's delight that crosses his face. For example, when he recounts how he admonished Syd about not wanting to mime for Top of the Pops because 'John Lennon wouldn't', and actually tells Syd that TOTP is what he's been waiting for all these years. At least Syd refused to do it. Then there is when the band didn't bother picking Syd up for a gig. Er, Waters was driving. Well, well.

This guy is a sociopath, no morals, no conscience. It's no wonder he thinks it a gas to support Putin. Of course he claims to miss Syd terribly because he has made a fortune from milking Syd's old material and writing 'heart-warming' tributes to his old pal. Kerching! Kerching! .
