Big deal, so the 'fellow' former band mates and producers kindly allowed Syd to carrying on performing as a studio soloist and wrote heartrending tear-filled tributes to him and even - gasp - let him share some royalties, which were his anyway.

The facts of Syd's departure are well-known He was treated horribly insofar as the way they dumped him, his having been the genius that put them on the road to superstardom anyway, with his innovative light slides and mirrored guitars. When he became catatonic on stage, they simply didn't bother to pick him up to attend gigs. He initially had no idea he had been frozen out. He'd turn up at recording sessions to their dismay, and they would mock him and joke about his pouring mandrax over his head, etc. When Syd realised he'd be ousted, it must have been a massive body blow to him and it can't have helped his mental health.

I would argue that the ones who were treated poorly were Barrett's band-mates. I've been in situations where someone in the band is unreliable. It's extremely frustrating when you've shown up to a rehearsal or a gig prepared and committed, and someone else shows up unprepared, or not at all. And being catatonic on stage was a definite let-down of his fellow performers. I wouldn't have wanted to deal with that either.

The only thing I've heard that was remotely close to the Mandrax claim was Nick Mason disputing reports that Barrett had crushed tablets into hair cream and put it in his hair. He said "he'd never have wasted mandies".

Sure, bands have tensions all the time, even outright fisticuffs. This wasn't that type of situation. In the above video in which Waters cries crocodile tears about his dear friend from childhood it is shiningly obvious that Syd was shafted by Waters and Gilmour. You can even see a smirk cross Waters' face as he describes how he bullied Syd by gouding him with, come on, Roger, Top of the Pops is what we have been striving for all these years! No wonder Syd was thunderstruck. He was counterculture. TOTP is the LAST thing he'd have been striving for. Completely contrary to his values. No wonder he refused to mime and looked blank. Then Waters reveals Gilmour was already playing with the band so we can see the plan was to betray Syd and replace him with Gilmour, you know, Kerching, Kerching, MONEY sell-out time. Waters and Gilmour knew what they did. Of course they are never going to say so and instead completely blame Syd for their own treacherous machinations. No wonder Syd never wanted anything to do with them ever again and no wonder his family kept them away from his funeral.
