I know of other individuals with Obama stickers and magnets on their cars that really want to make a political issue out of it. They want people to attack them for supporting Obama. And it seems just as likely to me that the attacker had another reason, but this is the reason that the victim wanted to be true. Just like if a black person and a nonblack person get into an argument on anything, I expect to hear the white person being accused of saying "******", because that's really what they want the argument to be about.

Because that's what you want to be true?

But the attacker's reasons don't matter -- book him. You don't endanger others' lives, you don't do road rage, you don't attack a ten-year-old. Unacceptable, motives irrelevant.

This is a recent Facebook post from my former co-worker Connie Shultz, a Pulitzer winner from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Her husband is Sherrod Brown, a Democrat U.S. senator from Ohio.

Sherrod and I were headed to Columbus last night when the Honda, bearing a McCain-Palin bumper sticker, first appeared on our left. I was driving.

The guy looked at us once. Did a double-take and looked at us again. He started waving his hand and mouthed, "Is that Sherrod Brown? Is that Sherrod Brown?" I smiled and nodded. Then he wagged his finger and his car started veering right-to-left, to the point where I decided to slide over just a bit. Then he leaned way across the front seat and, still yelling, gave Sherrod the finger.

OK. Fine. We kept driving, and first he pulled in front of us, then drove to the right of us, then fell behind at quite a distance. I thought it was because he saw me photograph his license plate. I always carry a camera these days, and whenever someone recognizes us and starts bullying on the road I hold it up and shoot, without a flash. Usually, they realize I've just captured either their faces or, in this case, the license plate, and it freaks them out enough to leave us alone.

This time, however, I looked in the rear view mirror and it was clear he wasn't finished with us. The driver was shuffling some papers, writing something down, and then he started speeding toward us. I turned to Sherrod and said, "I think he has a sign."

Sure enough, he pulled up close behind, then suddenly veered into the lane to our left. Driving with his left hand, he leaned far over and waved a sign that read, "1 TERM 4 YOU."

We stared straight ahead, but he kept veering into our lane. So we switched to the far right.

And that's the punch line, I guess.

Sadly, I think that actual deaths because of "ODS" (Obama Derangement Syndrome" is probably inevitable.
If you don't like him, fine,that;s your right, but the instance you resort to violence you lose all my sympathy.
THis also went for some of the more extreme elements of the Anti Bush crowd.

It should be just termed Partisan Derangement Syndrome since both sides suffer from it so thoroughly and so pathetically. It's like they're reduced to irrational animalistic behavior.

What I find equally disturbing is the false parity. "There were riots at the G-'insert number here', therefore there is some sort of false parity. One side is vocal and violent, and then claims false parity.

Now there may be confimation bias in my statement.

Some 15 years or so ago, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was at an event in East Germany where a protester threw an egg at him.

His bodyguards had to hold him back because he was trying to barge into the crowd to attack that protester.

I could understand it if he were some fringe candidate from an extremist party, but do I have to remind anyone that he's the *********** President, because he won the election? Since when was it a provocative act to support the elected leader of a democratic society?

When someone in the democratic party wins clearly. It is only republican presidents that all Americans need to support, just listen to the pundits.

I agree -- it's pretty bizarre for people to be looking for an argument based on having an Obama sticker; he did win the election, after all.
Nonetheless, it happens. Maybe it's because I live in a more conservative area.
