Republicans think you don't pay enough tax.

Just wanted to say thanks. I have to admit I didn't understand at first and I'm grateful to your patient explanations. That's why I love this forum.

No problem. I personally feel the lack of agreed upon facts is killing this country. It's my number one peeve with the right wing media outlets. I get that you might hate cap and trade. But pretending Global Warming is a hoax and that Obama invented cap and trade is willful ignorance. You might hate the new health care law. But it doesn't really have a bureaucrat choosing your doctor for you and there are no death panels. And the payroll tax cut proposal does not put SSI in the red.

We need to get back to a place where we base our politics on reality.

Agreed.

And yet it appeals to a sizable percentage of our population, most of whom are not rich.
This is indeed puzzling. But I believe it stems from the right wing's successful appeal to a simple-minded sense of self-sufficiency that affected our grandfathers through the novels of Horatio Alger and was later reinforced by various John Wayne movies of the 1950s. The right also has worked continually to establish the notion that anyone who must rely on any public benefit is somehow "getting something for nothing." People who subscribe to these illusions apparently don't realize that they are the ones the public benefits are intended to sustain and also that opposition to publicly funded benefits is kept aboil by the wealthy who will never need such aid and certainly don't want to help anyone else get it.

Well said. I hope do mind if I borrow some of your rhetoric and facts. :)

AND, the vote just happened. We all will be paying more tax.

THANK YOU REPUBLICANS for showing us all how MORE tax is better than LESS tax!!!
I really don't get their political calculations. And the notion that we "need to do this right or not at all" is really weak and pathetic.

You mean Obama wants to underfund Social Security?

No. Obama actually proposed (during the 2008 campaign) raising the tax ceiling so that people with higher incomes will pay proportionately more, ensuring the long term solvency of the Social Security program.

I can't believe these wankers are allowed to go on holiday while this BS is going on.

i sincerely hope that next november, the only thing that voters remember is, "the republicans raised our taxes."
it should not matter which one of the current clowns wins the nomination.

I'm also within that bracket. None the less..

Nice for you to go hungry, since you seem to want it.

Many families are going to literally suffer.

My charity work is involved with fund raising for a social services agency. I know exactly how significant $20 is to many families with young children. And this is a terrible thing, an indecent thing, an immoral thing to do to them.

Cutting the tax in the first place was a bad idea. I wish Obama had done a tax cut to income instead.

I should be paying more in Social Security taxes. All of my income should be exposed to SS taxes. All working Americans should be paying the full 6.2% - and SS taxes should be fenced.

The group of working Americans that take home less than 130% of a poverty income should pay no other taxes, including sales and use taxes.

The group of Americans that take home more than 3x a poverty income should make up the difference.

Democrat politicians should reel in their desire to make the goverment the be all, end all.

Republican politicians should grow up.

A House vote was set for Tuesday to seek negotiations on a compromise to renew the payroll tax cuts through 2012, a rejection of the bipartisan two-month extension that cleared the Senate over the weekend.

But Harry Reid ruled out new negotiations until the two-month measure is enacted.

You don't think that a two month extension from the Senate is a little ridiculous. That doesn't really solve any problems. Seems to me it was just kicking the can down the road so everyone can go home for Christmas. Don't just blame the House republicans if negotiations are ruled out.
