Republicans have choice between caving to Obama and shutting down Homeland Security

Please do let the DHS die. Their duties should be done by the FBI and Port Authority domestically, and by the CIA on foreign soil.

But who will take an actors lightsaber cane from him at the airport as a weapon with out them?

WSJ to the GOP: 'This is no way to run a congressional majority'

Restrictionists like Sens. Ted Cruz and Jeff Sessions are offering their familiar advice to fight harder and hold firm against “executive amnesty,” but as usual their strategy for victory is nowhere to be found. So Republicans are now heading toward the same cul de sac that they did on the ObamaCare government shutdown…

If Homeland Security funding lapses on Feb. 27, the agency will be pushed into a partial shutdown even as the terrorist threat is at the forefront of public attention with the Charlie Hebdo and Islamic State murders. Imagine if the Transportation Security Administration, a unit of DHS, fails to intercept an Islamic State agent en route to Detroit…

The restrictionist caucus can protest all it wants, but it can’t change 54 Senate votes into 60 without persuading some Democrats...

It’s not too soon to say that the fate of the GOP majority is on the line. Precious weeks are wasting, and the combination of weak House leadership and a rump minority unwilling to compromise is playing into Democratic hands. This is no way to run a Congressional majority, and the only winners of GOP dysfunction will be Mr. Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton.”

lol

Indeed. Why can't they:

Pass a DHS only budget. That shows they are willing to work with the Dems (even though they shouldn't get any credit for passing a simple funding bill, which they agree with)
Pass the anti-immigration thing separately let Obama veto it. They can then claim he isn't working with them.

Why are the so *********** stupid. Don't they know they make conservative skeptics look like tools when they blindly support whatever they do.

The Republicans in California appear to be so constrained by maintaining the purity of their ideology that they cannot nominate a Republican who would be popular enough to make it to State-wide office. I believe that none of the current California State-wide offices are held by Republicans. It has not always been so, but the trend has been clear for years...

I suspect that the Republicans in Congress are having a similar conflict between practicality and far-Right ideology.

The problem is that there are many extremely delusional Republicans that think holding the government hostage is a winning strategy for them. Boehner and McConnell know that it isn't because they are at least sane. They have already promised that no government shutdowns will happen on their watch.

What's eventually going to happen is that they will cave and pass a clean funding bill, probably with mostly Dem votes. Then the crazies in the GOP will call them traitors. It should be pretty funny.

They are playing it how their true constituents want it, republican primary voters.

The corner they have painted themselves into is that the same slack jawed retards that make up their base are going to think they are RINO turncoats when they cave. :D

Looks like the republicans can start funding again, now that judge hanen down in Brownsville has granted a temporary stay in the states' lawsuit against the Obama administration:

Federal judge in Texas blocks Obama immigration orders

Or, at least until it gets appealed in the morning.

I guess judge hanen can now return to the pressing matter of Orly Taitz and her TB Ebola Unspecified respiratory illness TB case...

even if they get it through the Senate, the House will not pass a "clean" bill that funds only the DHS. Face it, the bigots and nutjobs now run the republican party.

Over the past few decades, I have often thought the Democrats had a lot of idiots in the party, especially a decade or so ago. This was even though I am somewhat to the left of liberal. I saw some of the political schemes of the Republicans over that time as pretty clever, and it frustrated me that the Democrats often appeared to have no clue how to respond. This relates to political intelligence, and is separate from scientific or general knowledge issues, such as if the Democrats are more willing to accept evolution than the Republicans.

The topic of this thread, combined with many of the more recent actions of the Republicans, have convinced me that political stupidity can swing remarkably from one party to the other. Reassuring, I guess, if I ignore the fact that these people help govern us.

Willy Brown, Democrat and ex-Speaker of the California legislature, was a classical politician and probably responsible for many questionable actions, but was also one of the most brilliant politicians I have ever observed. When the Republications were due the legislative Speakership by virtue of a very close electoral majority a few decades ago, Brown twice figured out very clever legal political maneuvers to prevent it (at least temporarily). He so embarrassed the Republican Speaker to be, that he had to pull out of the competition.

I am not claiming that Brown's actions were morally justified (even though I must confess that I enjoyed watching them). Just stating that unlike many, at least one Democrat in those years was politically very smart.

This is just another example of Republican's knee-jerk opposition to literally anything Obama does coming back to bite them in the ass. They have no good options at this point; either they shut down DHS and get accused of allowing terrorists into the country or they pass a clean bill and get accused of caving in by the nutjob Tea Party base.

"Come on, Mr. Hobson; it's either one or the other."

I really think they are just gonna go to a corner and spend some time playing with themselves.

Or Obama could just stop breaking the law and rescind his unconstitutional amnesty executive order.

So are Republicans just supposed to do nothing in response to such a brazenly illegal act and dangerous precedent?

His executive order isn't unconstitutional* and Republican presidents have similarly used their executive power in this way. Even if it was holding DHS hostage to try to get their way just proves how worthless they are.
