Rep. Trent Franks is expected to resign

How exciting and entertaining, this really is important news to me. I love hanging out at this new National Enquirer forum. Yay.

Trying to look at the non partisan side of it, it looks on the surface as if Franks behaved badly, knows it, and is doing what he should, and even though he is a Republican, I don't see why what appears on the surface to be a reasonably responsible action should be seen otherwise. The party as a whole has, and will have, plenty to answer for, and it may be that the party is more willing to let him go than it is others, but that's not Frank's problem. He clearly has his own set of problems, and whether he's doing the right thing for the wrong reasons or the right ones, I think it would be more polite just to let him go and not spin out the partisan diatribe every time.

Someone forcing you to be here?

ETA: $5 million? He asked 4 times? How long until he got a clue that the woman really didn't want this?

Okay.

Let us assume Rep. Franks asked a staffer or two to be a surrogate.

Is that bad?

Of course, it depends on how he asked.

No; there is no appropriate way to approach an employee who depends on you for a paycheck and ask if you can impregnate them. It's impossible to reduce the abuse-of-power-dynamic problem inherent in such a request by asking really nicely; I don't really see any possible grey areas that would make this a tricky issue.

LOL, Just be patient, there's only 434 Reps and 98 Senators to go who can/will be outed for sexual improprieties. :)

I wonder why the hell he'd offer that amount of money. He already knew all about surrogate birth. He and his wife got twins the surrogate route in 2008, after three attempts at adoption failed because the mother at the last moment decided to keep the baby. As to his views on abortion, they went to a clinic where only a "limited number of embroys were fertilized" because then it's apparently not murdering unborn babies or something.

But apart from his hypocrisy, there's something deeply fishy about that $5mn offer.

Franks is rich, so I'd suppose that while most of us would consider five million bucks a pretty fair chunk of change, it would not leave him eating cat food. So fishy? Not so much. Tone deaf for sure - even a fool ought to know to ask only once; and mercenary and creepy yes. More to it? Maybe, but maybe not. An empty hat has nothing in it no matter how hard you look.

The amount reminds me of the Hastert case. The sex was eew but I was probably just as scandalized by his earnings in such a short tenure as a consultant, lobbyist, whatever he was.

I was surprised one night that financial radio guru Dave Ramsey took a call from a woman who wondered if she should go into debt to finance IVF. He's a Christian pastor (though not too obnoxious about it), and I wondered about the issue of leftover zygotes. When I researched this I saw that some bloggers quoted an OT cite that says, "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb" as evidence that the Bible would be OK with tossing out embryos since they aren't formed in the womb. IIRC most fertility clinics strongly advised multiple embryos. A few Christians disapproved of throwing away the extras including the head Southern Baptist, but it seemed acceptable to a lot of evangelicals.

This lady - and I'm sure everyone knows who she is - had to turn him down 4 times? What the hell. Despite his wealth someone should have passed around the hat to buy this guy a clue.

The clinic fertilized only a limited number of eggs? As opposed to what, the infinite number usually used? And if he did insist on actual intercourse, more eew. There are other delivery systems. An oral syringe comes to mind.

You don't get rich by unnecessarily throwing money out of the window. Franks knew that the $5mn he offered was on the order of 100 times the going price for a surrogate mother. There must be more to it.

Yes, that's a pretty stupid statement. He could have said "we donated the other embryos", thus proudly upholding is pro-life convictions, but as he didn't, he's probably as much a hypocrite as other "christians" of his type.

That's probably what it amounts to; it's the only thing that makes sense to me in this whole story. And probably not just actual intercourse, but the staffer becoming his mistress.

I would gladly take his 5 million and be a surrogate. Even though I am a man, I've read that is not an obstacle any more to becoming pregnant.

Latest reports now indicate he was asking for sex. One staffer claims retribution after she turned him down. It's starting to make a little more sense. I assume he tried to get in front of the story, resign, and hope the news cycle would pass him by.

And probably not the way it's done in "The Handmaid's Tale," either.

The Handmaid's Tail.

The lengths this man felt driven to go to in order to justify extramarital sex. He should have just taken a concubine. Totally OK with the Bible.
