Merged Rep. Giffords Shot In Tucson

In my library, I have The Koran, The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich, Blade Runner, The Lord of the Rings, The Joy of Sex, The Bhagavad Ghita, Tao Te Ching, Profiles in Courage, and The Gas We Pass.

what does that tell you about me? ;)

That you need to buy "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep":D

Is SoT saying that violent rhetoric isn't so bad because some theist did some terrorist activity?

SoT is saying that since the Fort Hood shooter turned out to be a nutty Islamist, it was ok to assume he was a nutty Islamist before any of the facts were in.

:D

How is it possible to hold the communist manifesto and mein kampf in high regard at the same time and have a functioning human brain?

I really like the Sword of Truth series, written by a Libertarian. Yet I don't find the Libertarian philosophy in high regard.

Maybe the guy thought he was educated because he read those books and has a higher understanding of "the enemy" or some such.

Department of Homeland Security is investigating possible ties the shooter might have to American Renaissance, an anti-semitic/pro-white supremacy hate group. Anti-semitism seems to be the presumed motive. Giffords is Jewish.

yeah, but she doesn't look Jewish. ;)

There's a big difference between having something in your bookshelf, and naming it among your favourite books. I have the Bible and Marquis de Sade in my bookshelf, but I would not name them among my favourites.

And some of her facebook followers took it to heart:

To Palin's credit, she's been removing those comments.

I would bet money that that was sarcasm, not an actual endorsement of the shooting.

Possibly because he doesn't understand them, and maybe never even read them. Sometimes people just say these things to make themselves sound edgy and dangerous. I have a Truther brother-in-law like that who, incidentally, is also a raving loony when it comes to eliminating the Federal Reserve and going onto the gold standard. I hope he doesn't have any guns.

There are people who are absolutely fascinated with the mindset of "the enemy" and would list such books as their favorites while not holding those philosophies or views in high regard.

Yeah, my dad ordered a copy of Triumph of the Will out of historical curiosity. I'm guessing he won't go on a killing spree anytime soon, but that's the sort of thing that goofy media folks run with.

In general, there's a sort of intellectual puritanism that goes on in this country, especially around election time. Whether you agree or disagree, everyone considering themselves and intellctual should, for example, read and be familiar with Marx's theories. If it's revealed that some politician took a college class on social philosophy that included readings of Marx, however, the media is overcome with the vapours.

And, of course, 99% of books on bookshelves of Americans probably haven't been read.

As for the gasoline, that's only true if people decide to be completely stubborn. In the 70's, when Bill Ayers was wandering around and the Black Panthers were actually the Black Panthers, there was a SERIOUS problem with violence on the left. That has more or less been supressed, but it's always present.

No, the serious problem of violence was racism and worthless wars in Asia, and back then, some people had backbones. They weren't docile slaves, hoping the system would fix everything for them.

* you hate the country
* you hate yourself
* you hate our "freedom"
* you hope it is true
* you are lying

How are these ad homs? I don't think I could have been any more clear. Americans hate each other. Whites hate Mexicans, left hates right, rich hate the poor, and visa versa. It's a wonderful powder keg ready to go kaboom.

I think you need to re-read what I wrote. I said Trane and you all love your country, and what you think it stands for.

These platitudes are nothing but ad homs used to diminish the criticism someone doesn't want to address. An ad hom that doesn't have a shred of truth in it has no effect other than to stop true debate.

What true debate do I want to stop? The one about whether this was left, right or CTer's fault? Keep it up y'all is what I said, and I meant it. Let the hate and chaos flow! External enemies could never bring down the American empire. But like so many early critiques of democracies noted, they always, eventually, consume themselves with factionalism. Do you think our government was really formed with some perfect numeric balance? Come on. It was set up as pretty much a game with rules, and those rules have been sidestepped so much it is beyond recognition... ...not that the rules were perfect by any means in the first place.

LoL

You are the ones thinking your arguing, excuse me, "debating" :rolleyes: LoL on forums here will somehow stop the inevitable. Even if you are crying for calm and not placing blame, (which the vast majority of you are only doing so to smash your political enemies), it still is not going to stop the rampant ignorance and hatred in America. The problem with America is... it is run by Americans.

For every well thought out argument here on JREF, there are 100 stupid emails being circulated through the average idiot's email full of lies and hatreds and exaggerations. Unfortunately, idiots can vote too, and unfortunately, idiots outnumber the informed, and even worse, the selfish vastly outnumber the community minded.

What are you going to do about this? There is nothing you can do!

Might as well report him to homeland security now, comrade. He is obviously a recipe for political assassination, as this shooter in AZ has shown.

Make the bolded change and I don't disagree.

Just because a problem isn't the largest problem, that doesn't mean it's harmless. The left is better for leaving "domestic terrorism" out of its repertoire.

I am an agnostic/deist....but it appears this woman clearly has a friend upstairs.

I am very happy to hear she may be ok. One lucky lady. :):):):)

Everyone has that same friend upstairs. I heard about it on the radio and immediately prayed for those people. I'm sure millions across the world whom believe in God did the same.
