None of the other mummies from the Atacama desert that I've seen look heavily lacquered. Do you know a naturally occurring case of a lacquered-looking desert-dried mummy? Unless you can show an example, I think I'll go with a prepared, lacquered fetus mummy, not a naturally dessicated one.

Fair enough. It's clearly a possibility. I just don't think it's a necessity. It could have been found that way, it could have been made by someone bored with the usual pickled punks, it could have been found and then treated to end up with that look. I suppose we could talk to the folks who make them from pigs if we wanted to know more about what different conditions do to the lil guys. I honestly haven't seen any human fetal mummies besides this one, just babies.

Some bones may even have been replaced with mature animal bones. We just don't know.

I'm gonna call that a stretch though.

And in defense of the 2 Stanford guys who examined it, they only reported its origin in the Atacama desert as hearsay. Since we only have the word of an incredibly unreliable source for that bit of information, I wouldn't rely too heavily on it.

I'm not ruling out a hoax, but despite the overuse of the phrase "elaborate hoax", most hoaxes are clumsy and simple. This one would have to be almost incredibly involved.

Thanks for that link to the Etsy site Lithrael. Man, the things people sell on that site can be pretty strange.

The fetal pig does look exactly like this little skeleton. It may even be that it was treated by someone in the same manner to prevent it from falling apart. Naturally preserved mummies can be delicate and I could see some amature anthropologist doing that sort of preservation without properly documenting it.

Still, can you blame us for being a bit hesitant to believe? No one wants to have another Piltdown Man.

Welcome! Yeah, there's some quality weird for sale out there. Things that, once upon a time, could only be seen at creepy estate sales in the middle of nowhere, are on google-indexed and searchable shops...

I don't at all object to the skepticism, I guess it just rubs me the wrong way when people say "I'm calling fake because this this and this don't match up with my preconceptions" rather than "Based on this one photo, and without chasing it around myself because I got other stuff to do, I'm assuming fake." I just generally want people to include their, to them, obvious caveats, out loud. Though I can understand that getting pedantic and annoying.

I guess I'll revise my WAG more in line with you guys, though, as I haven't yet found any examples outside of bogs or intentional treatment that get that lacquered look. So it wouldn't shock me if it's been soaked in something at some point, though I haven't the expertise to guess at whether that was while it was being made, or after it was found.

You would THINK that would be easy for a science type examining the actual piece to determine, though. Anything resin or lacquer-like that was layered on/soaked in is still there and shouldn't AFAIK defy analysis. So either nobody has bothered to do it or nobody has bothered to report it.

I may be seeing things, but I count 11 ribs. The 11th is lighter and shorter but visible. That makes me believe the "expert" that counted 10 maybe is the real problem. Because everything points to a fetus except that one "expert's" opinion that the knee joint is 6 years old.

I am no expert, but I can count. If he cant even count 11 ribs, how can we accept his judgement about a knee cap?

Maybe you're seeing things indeed. This is your "expert". btw, the little fellow also has a tooth. Fetuses fortunately don't.

Then I don't know how anyone is pursuing this 'aliens!' malarkey with anything approaching a straight face. It may be a foetus that someone tried to lay to rest, it may be a foetus that someone tried to make a buck off of, it may be both... But that's as far as the mystery goes. The story may be made up of course, but if it isn't, that sure sounds like the sad end of some poor girl's pregnancy, some girl who didn't think it was best for anyone to know but who tried to give her lil guy a little respect in death. And now he's internet famous as an alien freak. Sorry bout that, little guy.
