Reason Rally Roll Call (Washington DC, Mar 24, 2012)

I've been looking for an excuse to go back to DC. http://reasonrally.org/
I haven't marched on the National Mall since GAMOW in 2002. I think this'll be at least as much fun. :D

Sightseeing anyone?

I've been to DC 3-4 times, but always on business, and never longer than 3 days. So I've never gotten to do any sightseeing, other than walking around the perimeter of the White House (we were in the Treasury Building next door. If you walked out the back door, you were on the WH grounds. Needless to say, the door was guarded. But I did have to get a low level security clearance just to get in the building.)

So I plan on going from maybe Wed-Tue or something like that.

I was in D.C. in May for the Secular Coalition for America's summit. I went to the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles (it's where they display the things that are too big to bring to the Air & Space Museum on the Mall) and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Maybe this year I'll try the Museum of American History and the National Cryptological Museum (in Ft. Meade). I don't know what my schedule might be, but I may drive to D.C. on that Wednesday and drive home on Sunday.

In May I found it was cheaper to stay out near the Beltway and take the Metro each day. I'll probably do the same for the Reason Rally.

I think I've been to all the Smithsonian museums in D.C. at least once, near as I can tell. Though, I haven't been to the American History one since it was remodeled. It was closed last time I was there... for remodeling.

Are there usually counter-protestors?

For just about anything, yes. Even in the DragonCon parade this weekend there were people with "sinners will burn in hell" signs. (It should be noted that "Fans for Christ" were maintaining a very large distance between themselves and the fruitcakes.)

Yeah, at Gen Con Indy there are always guys handing out pamphlets on the street corners. But then we have the "Christian Gamers Guild" that even hosts a Sunday morning worship service at the convention, so that's always nice.

I wonder if there will be any "pro-religious freedom" Christians at the rally.

Possibly, but the event seems pretty atheism-heavy.

Personally, I doubt many people will show up at all.

There were at the Godless Americans March On Washington in 2002. (I guess we technically weren't protesters; maybe 'activists' would be a batter word?) They were in groups holding signs at the side of the Mall as we were marching to the stage at the end, and some hanging around on the outskirts during the talks. Nothing to worry about. The Capital Police were excellent and made sure the protesters did not bother us.

I'm trying to work my schedule out so that I can come to this. It seems like loads of fun, and I know lots of great places to eat in DC.
