Randi on Anderson Cooper 360

Thing I loved the most was when Linda said Sylvia might have been talking about other people when they brought up how she was wrong on specific cases. So...people should pay Sylvia, just in case the messages she is getting *might* be about the loved one they are concerned about?!

My eyes are welling up with tears of laughter just thinking about that few minutes. Linda squirmed and wiggled as hard as she could. After that, you notice she meandered off from every question, so she couldn't be cornered so again? Priceless! I was a bit disappointed Randi got to shouting at the end; that wasn't a good media soundbite, but completely understandable to anyone who watched more than 5 minutes of it. Anderson could have done more at the end to reign Linda in to just sticking to answering the questions.....though it's tough to chase someone halfway across the world when they are obliterating their trail as determindly as Linda did.

E-mail, e-mail, e-mail the show, and any other that you think could do a fair job mediating such opposing forces. That's what will help keep this going.

If we go with what Sylvia Browne's fans claim are souls, then we cannot reach any other conclusion than Sylvia Browne is an Eater of Souls.

If you believe in Sylvia Browne, she will feed on you.
 
I just saw the youtube posts (thanks Lisa!). I loved the exchange except for acouple of things. I can certainly understand the "DO YOU MIND!" erruption. but losing one's temper is'nt always a good thing in a public debate or forum.

I know Mr. Randi has put up with quite lot of crap throughout his prodigeous career and she certainly deserved the heated comments but the loss of temper serves to place you in an unfavorable light.

People have a habit of mixing the message with the messenger.

When someone asks you a question, and then interrupts you while you are answering that question, it is quite alright to cut them off the way Randi did.

Do you want the question answered, or are you just trying to deflate criticism?

Randi wasn't rude, Linda Rossi was. He cut her down to size, because of that. Let's keep perspective here, people.

Claus if we were to go with what you believe it would be said we all walk around on drumsticks.

While I agree Sylvia is the worst kind of person, you need to choose your analogies better.

Exactly. I don't know what definition of "rude" people are using here, but he never interrrupted her even when she expected him to and even gave a "let me finish" snipe AFTER it looked like she'd finished her point. Then she turned around and interrupted Randi at every opportunity.

If anything, he was the reserved one. And "do you mind?" isn't a terribly rude response to not being afforded the same courtesy you've afforded someone else... especially since he didn't add "you bitch" to the end of it.

You have completely missed my point. I am not saying that souls exist. I am saying that, if we go with what Sylvia and her cult believes, there is no other way we can describe her actions.

If you choose this time - of all times - to make cheap shots at skeptics, that is your choice. I can only lament that.

WOW! :D Watching those clips (thank you very much Lisa Simpson) made my day. I actually "woo-hoo'd" aloud when Anderson asked if her if he was godless to be asking questions...

Also - I just sent emails to the daily show and anderson cooper 360...here's hoping!

I was not questioning who's right or who's wrong. Randi was certainly in the right, he had the facts to back up his statements, and Mrs. Rossi's behaiviour was reprehensable. She was clearly lying, being rude and evasive.
I said in my post that I felt she deserved the outbursts.

My issue is about presentation and how people view personalities. Cooper was even embarrased that the debate finished in a shouting match. (Although clearly due to Rossi's rudness)

What I was concerned with was the direction in which the debate took toward the end. The loss of temper does not place you in a positive light even if it is justified. That's pretty basic in the art of debate.
People place more wieght and respect on a cooler head in the face of rudeness and ranting.

I am reminded of one of those reality type cop shows where an officer stopped a man for speeding. The speeder was completely apoplectic and verbaly abusive. A lesser officer would have lost his temper and made a bad situation worse. I was much impressed with the cool and firm handed way in which the officer handled the jerk.
The officer even made the a--hole pick up the citation after he had thrown the citation down at the officer's feet.
It really made the driver look more like the idiot that he was. And the officer did with without resorting to shouting or physical force.

In a debate, remaining cool and in control in the face of abusive hysteria places you in a higher standing in the eyes of the audience.

I am in no way damning Mr Randi. He did a great job. I was just a little disconcerned that someone of Mr Randi's experiance and standing would allow some idiot like Rossi to loose his cool.

Even if she did deserve it.

My personal opinion though.

I think most of the New Age stuff is a marketing game to make lot's of money anyway. I think Sylvia just jumped on the wagon early in the game.

I agree Rossi was the one being rude. I never said that Mr Randi was being rude either. The point of my post was that, in a debate, losing your temper is not a good thing. Even if it is justified.

Cooper even made a statement concering the outburts.

Losing your temper and resorting to shouting in a debate indicates a loss of control. People interpret that loss of control as weakness in your argument.

Clearly Rossi resorted to shouting first and threw in a few ad hominims to boot. Randi could have added strength to his position in the eyes of the viewers by remaining cool and firm and letting Rossi continue to make a fool of herself.

Again I thought that Mr. Randi did a great job. I just wish he hadn't resorted to the shouting at the end.

Not to mention ... Randi's like 78 years old right? The show went until almost 11 pm. It was past his bedtime. Anyone would be a bit cranky at that hour, at his age.

While I see your side and don't disagree with it, other than Anderson's show that's pretty much a staple of the cable news "person in the right box vs. person in the left box" banter.

While I'm not saying that's what Anderson was looking for (he clearly was hoping Randi wouldn't resort to making an outburst for the very reason you outlined), if he was truly that concerned about "his show being the exception where they don't do that" he should have chastized her himself with a polite "please Miss Rossi, he let you make your point now let him make his" before it got that far.

And that's not a slight on how Anderson handled it really. I understand he was basically tightroping walking there, but my point is that to the general public that exchange probalby wasn't taken as a negative by anyone except those analyzing it later... for most of them it was simply par for the course.
