Outrage over racist anti-Dandenong flyers
Springvale Dandenong Leader (followed a link at news.com.au)

GREATER Dandenong Mayor Pinar Yesil has condemned racist anti-Dandenong flyers being distributed around Frankston as “offensive and reprehensible”.

The bigoted brochure, which claims the State Government plans to build high-rise commission flats in Frankston and “fill them with Africans”, blames violence in Dandenong and Noble Park on the African population.

The flyers were distributed in Frankston over the weekend of August 8 with the heading “Do you want Frankston to become like Dandenong?”.

Cr Yesil called them “intolerable” and “scurrilous propaganda”.

“To live in Victoria’s most multicultural community is an honour,” she said.

Interesting. I would have thought indigenous people. I didn't know there were a significant number of Africans in Australia. Recent refugees? From what countries?

Whilst I do not endorse the flier, if I were in Frankston I would not like to see it become like Dandenong. The highrise Housing Commission flats are horrid, regardless of who live in them.
 
Wikipedia has a list of the sources for African migration to Australia. Most African Australians are white, from Southern Africa. Large scale black African migration to Australia is a fairly recent phenomenon and I think Sudan is the largest source.

True, but in Melbourne the Sudanese and Somali immigrants are concentrated around Dandenong and a couple of the equally disadvantaged northern suburbs, which has created a level of resentment. I would like to see new commission houses in Vermont, Balwyn, Sandringham etc. Won't happen.
 
It's typical of conspiracy theorists to be oh-so-specific to make it seem they "know" about "secret government plans". How do they know it's 385 high rises, for instance?

Looks like, perhaps, 70:

One proposal for 70 social housing units in Frankston was being examined by the Victorian Government for construction by December under the Federal Government's job stimulus, but no plans had yet been confirmed, he said.

I know at least one person from that country who thinks in the same vein as that poster.
I found it disturbing, to say the least.
 
Who would want to live in a high rise place in a outer suburb of a city? How much work is available in Frankston? I think the answer is not much.
 
I thought most urban authorities had walked away from these high rise sardine cans in the 70's. I know in Sydney they were an abject failure, the social issues were horendous
 
I'm sure you are both right. I'm certain that highrise commission flats are things of the past. I gave the flier far too much credit for being right about that.

And in case anyone thinks I am elitist about this, my mum live in a commission place in Sydney. Low rise with gardens and other amenities.

No I didn't get that impression at all. Australia has always had a tradition of Government assisted housing. No shame in that
 
The Frankston CBD has a big problem. Through poor planning decisions, there are a lot of derelict shops that are a blight on the area. Some people came up with the bright idea of turning an empty, run down eye sore into housing for people who need it.

Refugees from places like Somalia often do have serious issues, that's why they became refugees. Hating and fearing them doesn't resolve those issues. Every new wave of immigrants sparks the same fears, back when I was young it was the Italians and Greeks who were going to ruin the country.

I have a friend who taught at High School in Springvale, and loved it. He taught in Frankston later, and hated it. Frankston already has serious social problems, but it's mostly white, home grown bogans. For some reason, they don't matter.

Sad to say, Australia has a rather long history of racism. Most recently about Indian students. But this does not surprise me. I wish it did.

The issue of attacks on Indian students is not clear cut. Some of the attacks seem motivated by racism but not all of the perpetrators are white and most attacks seem opportunistic.

Spot on gtc. There are a lot of attacks on lone travellers on late night trains, but the only ones which make the press are attacks on Indian students.

And it should be noted that the worst and most graphic attack in Melbourne recently was by a group of Somalis on someone walking through an underpass caught on CCTV.
