Racial incident in Australia

This is quite disgusting.. I have a friend who lives near Dandenong, I'll have to ask him what's up with this.
Welcome Bloodtoes.

I know a bit about Dandenong. It's a traditionally working class town subsumed by greater Melbourne 40 years or so ago. It was the manufacturing centre of the city and attracted many young families in the 50s 60s and 70s because the land was relatively cheap (my wife, before I met her, had the option of buying a block of land in Dingly, near to Dandenong, but bought a Mini instead).

Manufacturing has diminished, unemployment is high by Australian standards (but low by international standards, at around 10%) and there is much disadvantage and violence, again by Australian standards. There is cross-generational unemployment, with children growing up to unemployed parents of unemployed parents. On top of that, there are few natural attractions for kids, like beaches.

In other words, a perfect place to settle refugees from the lawless Horn of Africa. Frankly, I think it is amazing that there have not been more racists attacks there.

I agree with Darat. It is not the building that is the problem. As he says it is possible to live in a high rise apartment that costs a fortune to buy. It is putting all the poor and others who live on the margins of society in one place. Canberra has partly solved this problem by mixing the population so that most suburbs have a mix of housing types.

Charnwood.

I didn't say architecture caused the problems by itself, but it didn't help. And it had a greater effect than one would imagine. Of course, it is also conceivable that someone would buy an old prison yard and turn it into an hotel (or whatever) -- but still prison architecture is depressing.
