Putin dissolves govt.

Why can't I stop thinking of Dune?

"It is I, President Vladimir Putin, who encompases your doom!"

Daily, he comes closer to being the embodiment of a Republic Serial villain.

Have to comment on the second story first of all as it contains one of the funniest but seriously meant quotes I've read for a long time:

"The tests have shown that the new air-delivered ordnance is comparable to a nuclear weapon in its efficiency and capability," said Col.-Gen. Alexander Rukshin, a deputy chief of the Russian military's General Staff, said in televised remarks.

Unlike a nuclear weapon, the bomb doesn't hurt the environment, he added.

:wackylaugh: :wackytwitcy:

That's it Col-Gen Rukshin - you go for the green endorsement! I can see it now at the next arms fair:

"Dad of all bombs - as recommended by Green Peace"

I wonder if the factory that makes them is also "carbon neutral"?

I was going to post the environment quote. I am glad Darat beat me to it.
Question:
If a certain area of a niche is destroyed, and all life in that area dies; how is the environment not hurt? Say this bomb was dropped in a small koi pond, would this bomb not hurt the pond environment?

I don't think this is his goal. It appears that he wants to speed up elections.
If I recall correctly, he came into power when Yestsin dissolved the government at that time. Just because he is dissovling the government does not mean he is trying to become dictator. I could be wrong though, I will worry more if he changes his name to Hugo.

You are blowing up the carbon footprint of all the dead people? Is that a trade off like carbon credits?

That's kind of amusing. Russia claims it's got the biggest non-nuclear bomb ever, and maybe they're right. But the MOAB never saw a lot of action, and this thing is likely to see even less. Far more significant in real terms (especially against terrorists) is actually the introduction of smaller precision munitions, in the form of the small diameter bomb (SDB) and the Excalibur GPS-guided artillery shell. I'll be impressed with the Russians when they can match us on that front, but this is really of no consequence. It's posturing for the benefit of people who don't have a clue. Granted, there's a lot of such people out there, so it may serve them quite well in that regard, but that's really it.

They´re going for the "why build a guided bomb where you select through which window pane it enters a building when instead you can build a bomb that flattens the whole neighborhood at once?" school of thinking. Not particularly subtle, but it gets the job done.

And don't forget - in an environmentally friendly way....

Comparably environmentally friendly...

Everything is comparably good if you find something comparably bad to compare it with.

If Putin is not trying to become dictator of Russia he is giving a damn good imitation of a man wanting to.

And it's probably cheaper, too. Fewer computery parts.

Being a chemist, when I read about governments being dissolved, I always wonder what kind of solvent was used.

For Russia it's probably the same stuff that's in this:

Iron Fist Cleaning Solution (tm) - the product that made Stalinist purges possible. Dissolves every last vestige of freedom and democracy. For unexpected side effects, consult you local NGO or read a history book.

I presume there's a reason the US didn't use the 3X more powerful explosive in this bomb. As the MOAB is capable of holding more, apparently, this device would have a short reign at the top.

It's minor dressing with nowhere to go. They've no empire left to lord over but their own subcultures like Chechnya. The Warsaw pact and former republics have all gone bye-bye.

I can't imagine why. :boggled:

I too was thinking that this has all the makings of good material for an Onion article. I suppose that lack of radioactive fallout is somewhat better for the environment, although the concept of a green bomb is still rather ironic.

Whatever. Bush peered into Putin's "heart and soul." I wonder if he's planning on dissolving Congress. The quote someone over at Free Republic used a little while ago (in another context): "Democracy is government run by a bunch of idiots whereas monarchy is government run by one idiot."
