Merged Protests disrupt college campuses / Campus Protests

It's downright bizarre that protests need to be not only non-violent, but also 100% with no damage to property.

This is a criterion specifically designed to make sure that you can ignore the protest no matter what, because if it follows the rules you don't have to act and if they break them, you can use the cops to sort it out.

A legitimate protest can absolutely cause property damage - just not bodily harm.

To those who think property is theft, other peoples' property is fair game eh?

That horseshoe is something to behold.

You have never seen the Catholic when they prostrate themsevled in certain ceremonies have you?
Now you are going over the line into out and out religious bigotry.
And the people in that photo are a lot more dignified..as much as I disagree with their viewpoints..then some of the antics I have seen Pentocoastal do whne "Cught up in the spirit".

Exactly.
I agree that human lives are more valubale then property, but I have noted that people who have little respect fo other People's property generally have little respect for other people, period.
Please explain why looting some poor guy's small shop or restaurant along a Protest route is somehow proving anything. And I have seen this in person in Berekely a few years ago.
I also tthin, in answer to another of Great Zanaga's comments, that people have a right to ignore a protest if they so choose. Preotestors have no right to force themsleves on other people.
First thing I do whan somebody spouts the 'Property Is Theft" crapola is check to see if my wallet is still there.

Yeah and unfortunately for them the situation in the middle east is a lot less black and white than it was in South Africa. Instead of looking at South Africa they should be looking at the conflicts in the Balkans because this isn't an instance of one-sided oppression.

THIS.THIS.THIS.
The real problem I have with a lot of the rhetoic I see is that it;s only logical end is the destruction of Israel. Which would be a Genocide, let's not kid ourselves.

The long arc of the women's rights movement in the West bends towards praying to a religion that values them as less than dirt. Okay.

Jerry Coyne's latest on the protests at the University of Chicago, it seems the protesters have outstayed their welcome...

The President’s announcement that the Encampment is on its deathbed seems to have riled up the Encampers, who were shouting and chanting at the top of their lungs, heedless of the “no-noise” regulations. There are now more than 120 tents in the Encampment, which seems to have expanded overnight (many of the tents are the green-and-white jobs that suggest a common origin.)

Here are some of the crap the NYPD found at Columbia after they kicked out the peaceful anti-war protesters.

Knives, hammer, lots of tools, book on terrorism, other things peaceful people do not use.

"Book on terrorism"?

Is this supposed to be a joke?

It's a Very Short Introduction book, published by Oxford. It's not the Anarchist's Cook Book.

Ridiculous!

Checked it out on Google Books and it's pretty sympathetic to terrorists. On page 18 they have a picture of "Wafa Idris, the first female 'suicide bomber' or self-martyr... before her mission to a Jerusalem shopping center."

This is part of a section talking about how feminist terrorist organizations are. No, I'm not kidding. Talking directly about Idris and others:

"...women have been front-line actors and consequently, pioneer recasters of gender roles."

Note as well the scare quotes around suicide bomber and the corrected term of self-martyr (which conveniently ignores the fact that on her "mission", Idris killed an elderly Israeli man and injured over 100 others). It also ignores the fact that the reason Idris was willing to become a murderer was because she was depressed because her first cousin (and husband) divorced her when she couldn't get pregnant, and as a divorced woman she had no real place in Palestinian society.

So you just get to break someone else's stuff because you're more virtuous? Can I break your stuff? And you certainly know that few if any of the "protesters" will be held to pay for the damaged they made. Lunacy.

Depends - am I in a position to meet the demands of your protest?

Then, sure.

The problem with your reasoning is that everyone thinks their own cause is just.

If you are going to deem it "morally right" to use destruction of private or public property in order to further ones cause based only on individual self-righteousness you literally have no way of legitimately criticising Neo-Nazis or religious zealots from doing the same.

Oh the vandalism of a Jewish cemetery by Neo-Nazis? Its just property damage. Money can fix that no biggie. I don't get why people are all upset.

Sending children and youth to blow themselves up in attacks against resturants and shopping malls is truly the height of progressive gender politics.

No, the destruction of the commons cannot be fixed with a check.

Who said anything about the commons?
It's about putting pressure on the people who have put people in the position where protests are the only way to affect change

Are you really saying that Amazon slave workers don't have a moral right to sink one of Bezos's yachts? ( He might not notice).

Or that people getting slowly killed by the poison of the factory upstream shouldn't cement the pipes shut?

A majority of Americans think that smashing a police station was a perfectly justified thing to do.

But I guess killing people is the lesser evil than making people pay with their wealth for causing harm to people.

Vandalism of that sort is just that: there are no demands being made, no one to negotiate with
I am talking about protests/ strikes, not property damage for damage sake.

Just to be clear: I'm not saying that targeted vandalism as a method of protest should be legal - protesters get arrested for nothing all the time, they might as well be arrested for something.

But it absolutely does not legitimize a violent response by cops or vigilantes - property can be replaced, lives can't.

Further commentary (and sarcasm) on the University of Chicago Protest from the libertarians at reason<dot>com:

It's still happening! I regret to inform that the college students are still somehow at it. But their protests are getting progressively further from the plot. Take, for example, this University of Chicago supplies list, which seems to think dental dams and plan B are needed in order to *checks notes* help the Gazans?
