I read the book and it is OK but it ain't hard science fiction!
It relies, as much as possible, on scientific accuracy and goes into more technical detail than most sci-fi novels. I guess it isn't dry enough, though, to be considered hard sci-fi.

Therefore "as much as possible "I think it deviates from what is considered to be hard science fiction when it introduces astrophage.
The first teaser trailer was more faithful. I think they just decided to spoil the plot a bit to sell it as the buddy comedy and maybe overdid it, but there's visuals that indicate the book is still there - mainly the training center explosion and Grace being dragged by guards. The trailer for the film shows what will appear to be significant deviations from the book. I have since lowered my expectations for the film. But I will see the film right after it is released.
The design of Rocky is annoying. He appears to be designed by the those who did the Rock Creature on Galaxy Quest; not much like the image I had of him when I read the book.
Every hard science fiction has to make accommodations for the story. Actually accurate fiction would be deathly boring. To a statistical approximation, there is nothing in space.I think it deviates from what is considered to be hard science fiction when it introduces astrophage.

A fair analysis that N.Am is currently heading toward the apocalypseYour impression of my post is noted. I found North Africa fascinating. "Post-apocalytic" came to mind repeatedly.
It starts of sort of OKish in regards to the science, and yes it avoids FTL travel so can't be instantly relegated to science fantasy. I'm not criticising it for not being hard as nails science fiction, I love lots of science fantasy from EE "Doc" Smith to Alastair Reynolds, and beyond; I just didn't think it was a great book,It relies, as much as possible, on scientific accuracy and goes into more technical detail than most sci-fi novels. I guess it isn't dry enough, though, to be considered hard sci-fi.![]()
Since learning I have aphantasia I am jealous of those that can create internal visions, but I suppose it does mean that how they bring a description to life doesn't bother me, well as long as it meets the description, if they had a Rocky that had fairy wings or something I would be annoyed. The trailer for the film shows what will appear to be significant deviations from the book. I have since lowered my expectations for the film. But I will see the film right after it is released.

Those things we discuss in the Literature forum.
Come to think of it if this thread is about the film, not the book, why is it in the literature forum?
And yes, the book is great. Fingers crossed the film will be likewise.
Keeping Rocky clothed would have covered up the joints they had to animate. He would not look like a pile of rocks held together by string.I do wish they'd kept Rocky's jumpsuit. Aliens fussing over clothing does a tremendous amount to humanize them, from a theory of mind standpoint. Maybe not humanize. Sapientize. Whatever.
Please don't quote me on something I never said.A fair analysis that N.Am is currently heading toward the apocalypse
Please don't quote me on something I never said.
Not exactly, no.So a Varation on the "Generaltion Ship" plotline in Sci FI which has been around for a long time.
Concur. Not even Ballad of Beta 2.Not exactly, no.
