in a democracy, there is NO excuse for segregation, either by sex or by race. if this troubles you, and you simply cannot ride on a bus where you might be within 1' of a woman, then walk.

on this issue, I agree with you 100%. there is NO excuse for segregation, in 2009, in a democracy.

if even 20% of the people in Jerusalem do not agree with this policy, than it cannot stand. luckily, the great majority of Israelis are against this. and these bus lines need to stop sex-segregation.

Not all bus lines, only in high-density orthodox neighborhoods should this continue. Otherwise you are excluding that population from using public transportation. Apply this to the many orthodox religions who apply the same religious laws. Not just parts of J'lem or Iran.

Excellent question. If a "yes" answer depends on ALL citizens enjoying equal access to public facilities, then of course the answer is "no." When you consider that, until 1965, black people were absolutely forbidden to vote in large parts of the country, that pretty much says "no" to a more certain degree.

In simple terms, yes.

The practice of limiting interactions between unmarried men and women is seen in many cultures and countries, ie Namus. Not going into the extremes of these issues, I don't see how one's religious practices of modesty between the sexes should stop at separated toilets, schools, houses of worship, etc. and that of excluding these groups of people from public transportation in certain areas where there's a high density of orthodox religious people, be they Christian, Muslim or Jewish people.

I bet they already have their own public restrooms. Furthermore, German women don't suffer from such constant and intolerable harassment that the only pragmatic thing to do is to give them their own parking spaces, and I also don't think giving women in India or Japan their own trains is the only pragmatic thing to do; a few uniformed supervisors of whatever gender should do the trick just fine.

Conclusion: Democracies -- Western-style or otherwise -- do allow (even mandate) blatant forms of sex-segregation.
